This Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Leak Reveals A Lot About Rey's Family And It's Wild

Serious spoilers ahead!

Warning: This post contains potential major plot points from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Ever since 2015, when Rey appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, we’ve wondered who her parents were.

Theories suggested she was a Skywalker, or even Obi-Wan Kenobi’s daughter, but in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren revealed that Rey’s parents were “nobody”.

Now, a new rumour suggests that maybe Rey’s grandfather was Emperor Palpatine?

This would certainly fill some gaps on how she has such strong force powers and then also tie-in the fact that Palpatine appears in this movie. Plus, does it even count as a Star Wars movie if there isn’t some kind of shocking family reveal?

The report comes from Making Star Wars, in which Editor-In-Chief James Ward maps out the majority of Rise of Skywalker’s ending, which is based on sources close to the film – which is pretty bloody nuts.

It’s believed that Kylo Ren tells Rey about who her grandfather is and the fact that he’s somehow alive. Apparently, Palpatine wants to rule and it results in a huge showdown between him and Rey.

It’s unknown if Rey’s dark side appearance has anything to do with Palpatine, but it wouldn’t be surprising if it did now that we know they could be related.

It makes sense considering our Star Wars heroes often seem to be fighting family members or loved ones on opposite sides of the force: Luke with Darth Vader, Obi-Wan with Anakin and Kylo Ren with Han Solo.

So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Rise of Skywalker ended its 40-year saga with a twist on this iconic theme.

Making Star Wars also reports that Matt Smith is not part of the film as it was once believed. At one point it was thought that Palpatine would rejuvenate into his younger self who would be played by Smith. However, it now looks as though that’s not the case and Ian McDiarmid is doing the whole thing.
