It turns out that more of us are not only working flexible hours and in flexible environments, but actually preferring it, according to a new study.
The study, which was conducted by YourGov Galaxy and commissioned by Telstra, showed that many of the changes to the workplace often attributed to “entitled millennials” are seeping into all walks of life.
The working conditions most millennials are familiar with.
The study showed that forty per cent of Australians have worked remotely at some time, including 11 per cent of seniors, while over a quarter of Australians say that ‘flexible hours are important to them’.
On one hand, it’s great to see that some flexible working models are being embraced widely. For those with children, disabilities, or other commitments, for example, being able to work on a different schedule to the conventional nine-to-five is a godsend.
But on the other, this is more than likely another symptom of the lack of job security in our modern age. It’s something that hit me while I was completing my tax return recently, complete with five different employers, plus my side hustle operating an eBay store.
But don’t take my word for it; a US study last year showed that 50% of all millennials have a side hustle.

So yay to late capitalism reducing or working conditions to the point that we prefer no job security! Life is constant pain!
