Star Wars is one of the most popular franchises in pop culture history with some of the most vocal fans in the world, so when they don’t get it quite right, they’ll hear about it.
Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 and since then there have been plenty of Star Wars films, including sequels and standalone stories, and not all of them have been fan favourites.
Now, Disney CEO Bob Iger is admitting that they probably released too many movies too quickly after acquiring Lucasfilm.
Since Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Disney has released a new Star Wars movie every year.
Speaking with the New York Times, Iger said, “I just think that we might’ve put a little bit too much in the marketplace too fast.
“I think the storytelling capabilities of the company are endless because of the talent we have at the company, and the talent we have at the company is better than it’s ever been, in part because of the influx of people from Fox.”
So, does this mean Disney will slow down the production of Star Wars movies in the future? Iger is pretty sure the space opera will continue indefinitely, especially with the new talent they have from 20th Century Fox, following that merger earlier this year.
However, after the release of The Rise of Skywalker in December this year, Lucasfilm will likely take their time with their next releases.
The Last Jedi writer and director Rian Johnson and the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and DB Weiss, are working on new Star Wars stories, but it seems as though they aren’t rushing to get them done anytime soon.
While the movies will be slowing down, Disney+ will feature a live-action series, The Mandalorian, will be released in November.
The Mandalorian takes place five years after the events of Return of the Jedi, before the First Order formed.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on December 20th.
