'Holding Out For A Hero' From Shrek 2 Is Still The Greatest Song Of All Time

Put it in C minor.

The year was 2004, Shrek 2 the long-awaited follow up to the animated classic, Shrek had hit theatres and… it was perfect.

Everything about the film was exceptional and revolutionary but there’s something that stands out that, something that transcends the medium of film: Fairy Godmother/Jennifer Saunders’ cover of ‘Holding Out For A Hero’.

Bonnie Tyler’s ‘Holding Out For A Hero‘ was a great song at release but its use in Shrek 2 boosted it to god status. The song was rearranged to sync up with the action and the storming of the castle and Jennifer Saunders’ vocals soar to heights unknown. And we are the better off as a civilisation with this piece of art.

Move over Bohemian Rhapsody, there’s a new Queen in town. Forget everything bad that’s happening in the world because we finally know God sounds like… and she sings it in C minor.

Smash Mouth's Cover Of 'Don't You Forget About Me' Will Be The Best/Worst Thing You'll Hear Today

Shrekfest Club.

Californian rock band Smash Mouth have had a fantastic career of having their music used in or tied to movies.

Whether it was the underrated superhero flick Mystery Men, BASEketball or the default ‘90s classic, Can’t Hardly Wait.

What a concept!

And not to mention Shrek, the green giant that cemented All Star as one of the greatest songs in history, as rated, by me.

In the key on Don, in other words…DONKEY!

But in the dear old year of 2012, they covered Simple Minds’ Don’t You Forget About Me, memorably from The Breakfast Club soundtrack on their album ‘Magic’.

And what more can I say?

It definitely sounds like Smash Mouth covering the song and by that I mean it sounds GLORIOUS and now, more than ever they have solidified their place as the greatest band of all time.
