We’re at the tail end of Serena William‘s glistening tennis career and nearly every conceivable statistic points to her being arguably the greatest female tennis player – if not the greatest tennis player of all time – to ever walk onto a court.
And yet despite having more silverware in her trophy cabinet than the cutlery drawer at a restaurant, it’s truly stunning to see the amount of men who continue to underrate her skill.
According to a survey by YouGov, one in eight men in the UK (about 12%) truly, honestly believe that can win a point in a game of tennis against Serena. By comparison, only 3% of women believe they can win a point off her.
The amount of overconfidence shown by these one in eight UK men is truly staggering and one can’t help but laugh at this whole thing.
Not only are these men overestimating their ability to play tennis but they’re severely underestimating the difficulty of playing against a man or woman ranked 500 in the world, let alone an all time great like Serena.
The amount of racquet work, ball control and athleticism needed to stay in a rally with a pro is off the charts for an average person. That’s if you can even return a serve, which can come at you at speeds over 200km/h if you’re facing off against Serena.
So unless only eight men were polled in this survey and one of them was either Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic, these surveyed men who think they can win a point off Serena are what we call *checks notes* delusional idiots.
Unsurprisingly, this survey – and the crazy amount of self confidence of UK men – got a lot of attention from the interweb, who responded accordingly.
