Why The Government Is Begging You To Get A Flu Shot Amid The COVID-19 Crisis

Even if you don't usually get one.

The flu shot comes around every year, and usually it’s just another sign that we’re heading in to winter. Maybe you get it every year, maybe you don’t. This year isn’t like every other year though. The fact that we’re all indoors as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on means that the Government has bought 13.5 million doses of the flu vaccine and doctors are desperate for people to get them.

There is no vaccination for COVID-19 yet. Its coming, and scientists are working their tails off to get one ready, but it certainly isn’t ready yet. What we do have though, is the flu vaccine. It won’t stop you getting coronavirus or anything like that, but it will either stop you getting the flu or lessen your symptoms significantly so that you’re not taking up more medical resources in the middle of a pandemic.

“Protecting yourself and your family from the flu with a vaccination now will help reduce the strain on health resources from COVID-19,” said president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Harry Nespolon.

“If people don’t get vaccinated and an increasing number of flu patients and COVID-19 patients require urgent healthcare, lives will be put at risk.”

You don’t want this to be you

Usually we’re advised to get the vaccination from mid-April so that the worst of the flu season is covered, but this year the sooner you can get it the better. The flu shot should be available from your local GP or medical centre.

If you’re worried about being fined or jailed for leaving the house, don’t be. You’re allowed out for medical care in all states and territories, and getting a flu shot definitely falls under that banner. As long as you go straight home and don’t decide to go for a leisurely swim at the beach then visit everyone you know on the way home, you’ll be fine.

Listen to the Government and listen to the doctors. Get the flu shot this year, even if you don’t usually get it. Our medical system will thank you.

You'll Face Huge Fines And Jail Time For Breaking COVID-19 Lockdown

Serves you right.

If you live in New South Wales, then going outside for no reason is now illegal. Yep, you read that correctly, in fact you could cop a fine or be thrown in jail for up to six months if you decide that social distancing is not for you and you’ll be breaking the lockdown rules.

The COVID-19 Restrictions on Gathering and Movement Order, which came into effect at midnight, means that if you’re leaving the house “without a reasonable excuse” then you could cop a six-month prison sentence or an $11,000 fine. If you’ve messed up particularly badly, you could even get both.

There are thing you’re allowed to do of course. Go and get groceries, go to work or school (if you’re not working or learning from home), picking your kids up from school, and going out to exercise (as long as you’re socially distanced and joined by one person from your household, that’s it). You can even donate blood.

If weddings and funerals come under the limits of people who can attend, the you can go to those, too.

If you want to do anything that doesn’t fall under any of those categories, stay home.

A Western Sydney man was arrested and denied bail last week after ignoring social distancing rules three times. He returned from the Middle East and was directed to spend two weeks quarantining, but was found in Pagewood, the Sydney CBD, and Camperdown.

He may have been the first person arrested for not self isolating, but with these news rules, there’s a good chance he won’t be the last.

New cases of COVID-19 are beginning to decrease, which is definitely good news. We aren’t anywhere near the end of this mess yet, but if people just stay inside we could have this knocked over in a few weeks. Even if that means giving out massive fines and jail time for people who are breaking lockdown to leave the house.

This Medical Fetish Site Could Be Our Saviour In The Global PPE Shortage

Unusual times call for unusual heroes.

In strange and unexpected times, strange and unexpected heroes rise to the challenge. In this particular case, a medical fetish site has donated all of their scrubs to desperate health officials to help them get through the coronavirus pandemic.

MedFetUK is exactly what it sounds like. They sell doctors scrubs for people who have a certain affinity for doctor roleplaying (or whatever else you want to do with scrubs, this is a judgement free zone), but after being contacted by the National Health Service (NHS), they decided to donate all their stock to the healthcare workers.

Hospital systems all over the world have been dealing with major supply shortages as doctors and nurses battle COVID-19 on the front lines. In a Twitter thread, MedFetUK called it scandalous that they were even needing to be asked.

“When we, a tiny company set up to serve a small section of the kink community, find ourselves being sought out as a last-resort supplier to our National Health Service in a time of crisis, something is seriously wrong. In fact, it’s scandalous.”

“So when it’s all over…and the doctors, nurses and other staff have done an amazing job (as they undoubtedly will despite the circumstances)…let’s not forget, or forgive, the ones who sent the NHS into this battle with inadequate armour and one hand tied behind its back.”

It’s not often that you get to see a medical fetish site blast a major world government over the way that they’ve handled a global pandemic, but welcome to 2020 I guess. It’s been a strange year.

So shoutout to MedFetUK and all the other places that have chipped in to help in any way they can. We won’t be out of this mess for a while yet, but the fact that we’re all pulling together is a sure sign that we’ll get there eventually.
