How Did All These D-Grade Reality Stars Nab Celebrity Love Interests?

When your 15 minutes of fame becomes an hour, or more.

Let’s be honest, the celebrity dating pool can be pretty shallow. If you live your life in the limelight and want a partner who is equally-as-famous, there’s a good chance you’ll end up dating your best friend’s, co-star’s, agent’s, accountant’s cousin.

It seems as though Hollywood’s dating scene has become such a drag, a-listers are searching outside present company for love. Don’t believe me? Just look at some of the hot new celeb couples that have emerged over the past few weeks.

First, there’s Gigi Hadid, who swapped broody former 1D singer Zayn Malik for Bachelorette castoff, Cameron Tyler. Hadid and Tyler were spotted getting cosy on multiple occasions and then she sealed the deal by taking the reality TV star to her grandmother’s funeral! If that’s not serious, I don’t know what is.

Then there’s Demi Lovato, who is rumoured to be dating another Bachelorette contestant, Mike Johnson. Last weekend, Lovato and Johnson reportedly went on their first date, and according to E! News sources, “it’s been going well.”

And how could we forget about Zooey Deschanel? The actress recently called it quits with her husband Jacob Pechenik, and quickly moved on with Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott. Or Modern Family star Sarah Hyland who is engaged to former U.S. Bachie star Wells Adams.

So, how are all these b-grade reality stars nabbing uber famous love interests? Is it really because dating in showbiz blows? Or is it because we live in an era where reality TV reigns supreme and 15 minutes of fame has now become an hour – or more – because of social media?

It’s not out of the realm of possibility. Back in the early days of Big Brother, The Real World and Australian Idol, the only way we could get close to our favourite reality stars was by texting to vote them in, buying a Smash Hits CD, or blu-tacking a poster of them to our bedroom wall.

Nowadays it feels like we’re all just one DM away from making our on-screen crush our IRL boo thang. Or at least we are if we’ve already got a couple of thousand followers under our belts.

Perhaps this is just the world we live in now. The a-list is mingling with the d-list, Donald Trump is the President of the United States and we’re living in a perpetual climate crisis – but at least people still believe in falling in love, whether it be with a Tinder date, your friendly neighbourhood barista, the guy who does your taxes, or a humble reality TV star.
