Well, Influencers Have Wasted No Time Jumping On The Coronavirus 'Trend'

Disappointed, but not surprised.

I’m sorry to report that the influencers are back at it. This time, “it” is code for influencers using the coronavirus outbreak as a way to rake in the Insta likes. Yes, you read that correctly.

I know we didn’t really expect anything different, but I’m serious. Go into the #coronavirus tag on Insta and amongst the news updates and infographics you’ll find more selfies and very staged shots than you’re probably comfortable with. Some people are posing while wearing a face mask and others just straight up taking selfies.

If you don’t want to delve into the tag yourself – and I don’t blame you – I’ve bravely volunteered to check it out. I found all of these in about a minute.

Yup.

As I write, the coronavirus death toll stands at 162 people, all from China. Worldwide, more than 7,700 people have been infected. With the rate it’s spreading though, I’m sure when I check back tomorrow those numbers will be a lot higher.

The posts aren’t exactly considerate of anybody living under the threat of coronavirus, which is a pretty massive chunk of people. I was expecting to see them get ripped apart in the comments sections of these posts, but I’m afraid that most of the responses from people were along the lines of “super cute, love you!” so that’s disappointing.

I don’t know why this is annoying me so much if I’m honest. We’ve seen influencers exploit the bushfires and make a point of rushing to climb Uluru before it closed, and that’s only in the last couple of months.

Sadly, as I always am when it comes to influencers, I’m disappointed but not that surprised.
