The Gay Men’s Chorus Is The Best Thing To Come Out Of Awards Season

Wondering why Laura Dern is trending right now?

There aren’t too many queer-based storylines that make their way into mainstream cinema. As a result, the queer community have been forced to pull elements of pop culture that are seemingly heteronormative, but possess a “queer energy”. The Gay Men’s Chorus at the Film Independent Spirit Awards have hit the nail on the head with their celebration of all the pop culture elements in 2019, that are “property of the gays”. As a gay man myself, I can confirm they got everything right.

We spoke about Laura Dern and all of her queer energy on this episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

Parks and Recreation star, Aubrey Plaza, introduced the Gay Men’s Choir of Los Angeles at the Awards show, saying: “As you know, LGBTQ representation in film is more important than ever… And while we do have some amazing queer films nominated tonight, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the gayest moments in other films that you may not have realised were gay.”

Honestly, you have to watch it to get the full experience.

If you watched that and had no idea what was going on, allow me to explain to you why everything mentioned was, in fact, gay.

The Gays Love A Strong Female Lead

If you ask any gay male what their Netflix looks like, I guarantee you that they will most-likely say “Comedies/ Dramas With A Strong Female Lead.” Hence, the shout outs to Octavia Spencer, Awkwafina, Jennifer Lopez and the women of Parasite were well placed.

The Gays Love Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean is the most beloved and anticipated artist of our time, and he’s openly queer! As a result, we were pleased to see him allow his songs “Godspeed” and “Seigfried” onto the Waves soundtrack. Thank you Mr Blonded!

The Gays Love A Musical Theatre Legend

Before you knew her as Adam Sandler’s sassy, defacto wife, the gays knew Idina Menzel as the strong, independent Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked. Also, we know her as Queen Elsa from Frozen, not because of the movie but because of her iconic vocals. We love to see a diverse queen with many talents.

The Gays Love Drag Queens

Rupaul’s Drag Race is the gay-male reality show right now. In the past few years, our love of drag has left the nightclub scene and come for the entertainment industry. As a result, we love whenever drag queens get exposure. Hence, Renee Zellweger’s press tour for Judy was a real highlight

The Gays Love Laura Dern

We’ve already established that the gays love a strong female lead, pair that with dressing slutty in court, kicking red heels off a couch whilst dealing with a client and ordering kale salad, and you’ve got a gay icon
