The Gay Men’s Chorus Is The Best Thing To Come Out Of Awards Season

Wondering why Laura Dern is trending right now?

There aren’t too many queer-based storylines that make their way into mainstream cinema. As a result, the queer community have been forced to pull elements of pop culture that are seemingly heteronormative, but possess a “queer energy”. The Gay Men’s Chorus at the Film Independent Spirit Awards have hit the nail on the head with their celebration of all the pop culture elements in 2019, that are “property of the gays”. As a gay man myself, I can confirm they got everything right.

We spoke about Laura Dern and all of her queer energy on this episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

Parks and Recreation star, Aubrey Plaza, introduced the Gay Men’s Choir of Los Angeles at the Awards show, saying: “As you know, LGBTQ representation in film is more important than ever… And while we do have some amazing queer films nominated tonight, we wanted to shine a spotlight on some of the gayest moments in other films that you may not have realised were gay.”

Honestly, you have to watch it to get the full experience.

If you watched that and had no idea what was going on, allow me to explain to you why everything mentioned was, in fact, gay.

The Gays Love A Strong Female Lead

If you ask any gay male what their Netflix looks like, I guarantee you that they will most-likely say “Comedies/ Dramas With A Strong Female Lead.” Hence, the shout outs to Octavia Spencer, Awkwafina, Jennifer Lopez and the women of Parasite were well placed.

The Gays Love Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean is the most beloved and anticipated artist of our time, and he’s openly queer! As a result, we were pleased to see him allow his songs “Godspeed” and “Seigfried” onto the Waves soundtrack. Thank you Mr Blonded!

The Gays Love A Musical Theatre Legend

Before you knew her as Adam Sandler’s sassy, defacto wife, the gays knew Idina Menzel as the strong, independent Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked. Also, we know her as Queen Elsa from Frozen, not because of the movie but because of her iconic vocals. We love to see a diverse queen with many talents.

The Gays Love Drag Queens

Rupaul’s Drag Race is the gay-male reality show right now. In the past few years, our love of drag has left the nightclub scene and come for the entertainment industry. As a result, we love whenever drag queens get exposure. Hence, Renee Zellweger’s press tour for Judy was a real highlight

The Gays Love Laura Dern

We’ve already established that the gays love a strong female lead, pair that with dressing slutty in court, kicking red heels off a couch whilst dealing with a client and ordering kale salad, and you’ve got a gay icon

Kesha Has Been Ordered To Pay Up In Her Case Against Dr Luke

It’s all over a text sent to Lady Gaga.

A New York judge has ruled that Kesha’s comments regarding Lukas Gottwald – better known as Dr Luke, her former music producer – were defamatory. The comments in question go back to a text message Kesha sent to Lady Gaga, claiming that Dr Luke raped Katy Perry.

Dr. Luke’s legal team argued that the text messages sent to Gaga were made to bolster Kesha’s own accusations against him.

To top it off, Kesha has been ordered by New York State Supreme Court Judge Jennifer G. Schecter to pay Dr. Luke over $US373,000 in interest, because she still owes him $US1.3 million in royalties.

According to court documents, “publication of a false statement to even one person, here Lady Gaga, is sufficient to impose liability.”

The judge also said “Kesha made a false statement to Lady Gaga about Gottwald that was defamatory per se… There is no evidence whatsoever that Gottwald raped Katy Perry… Moreover, publication of a false statement to even one person, here Lady Gaga, is sufficient to impose liability.”

The long-running legal case between Kesha and Dr Luke goes back to 2014. Kesha accused him of sexually and emotionally abusing her, but she dropped the case in 2016. A year later, Dr Luke sued Kesha for defamation.

But this isn’t the end for Kesha. In a statement, her legal team said they will “immediately appeal” the February 6 court decision.

These Are All The Accessories I Want For The New Era Of Flip Phones

Flip it and reverse it.

Low-slung flare jeans, extremely-tight headbands and now flip phones; the early ‘00s are back in fashion and we want in.

Ah, the good ol’ days.

Earlier this week, footage of Samsung’s latest phone, the Galaxy Z Flip, leaked onto the internet and boy was it interesting. Notably this phone, unlike the one in your pocket, is a flip phone.

Operating with the same dimensions as a Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP, this purple flip phone is transporting us way back to the early noughties, you know, when we didn’t have smartphones.

Remember when it took a good 47 seconds to send “LOL”.

It’s truly an astonishing sight to see what appears to be a ‘00s phone open up to be an extremely sleek smartphone. And, let’s be real, if Samsung are making it, you can bet big money that flip phones will come back on trend real soon.

So to celebrate this new phone’s existence, we thought we’d bring back all the accessories that we want for when we eventually buy this phone.

Attached via a tiny piece of string, charms were the way to show your personality. With charms, you could personalise your phone so that it showed off your interests or just made your phone look really cute. Sadly there’s nowhere to put charms on an iPhone, so this trend has faded away. But, we really hope it comes back!

Skins were everything in flip phones. It was so hard to find the perfect one because you would have to find a skin that showed enough of an image that you could recognise it, but not too much that it gets all cut off because of the numbers. Hence, most of us went with block colours. Given flip phones are coming back with smart screens, I’m not sure if these will make a comeback, but we can sure dream!

If we don’t have skins, I bet we can count on stickers to make a comeback. They haven’t gone anywhere per se, but we hope they make a comeback on our phones. How else are going to show some sparkle!

A phone case for flip-phones was way different to phone cases for smartphones. They were thick and they were clunky; making them unable to fit in one’s pocket. But, given how popular phone cases are with flat phones, we imagine cases will find a way to come back with flip phones. All we hope for is a sleek design with some cute graphics.

Me throwing my literal iPhone away when flip phones return.
