Ricky Gervais' PSA To Rich Celebs Complaining In Quarantine Is Gold

Major eye roll.

If there’s one person who isn’t afraid to call a spade a spade right now, it’s comedian Ricky Gervais – who has zero sympathy for rich celebs complaining about being stuck in quarantine.

In a recent interview with The Sun, Gervais said, “After this is over I never want to hear people moaning about the welfare state again, I never want to hear people moaning about nurses again.”

“These people are doing 14-hour shifts and not complaining. Wearing masks, and being left with sores, after risking their own health and their families’ health selflessly. But then I see someone complaining about being in a mansion with a swimming pool. And, you know, honestly, I just don’t want to hear it.”

Speaking of celebs and COVID-19, hear about the ones who have been affected by the virus below:

Gervais’ comments come just one month after singer Sam Smith broke down in tears on Instagram about being stuck in isolation in their $23M home.

Sadly, Smith isn’t the only celeb to complain about their ritzy quarantine circumstances. Celeb chef Gordon Ramsay recently described lockdown in his $7.8M Cornwall home as a “living nightmare.”

Ellen DeGeneres also ruffled feathers recently when she compared living in quarantine to jail in a rather tone-deaf joke. “One thing I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that…this is like being in jail,” she said on the first home edition of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone here is gay.”

Then there are all the celebs who featured in Gal Gadot’s cringeworthy ‘Imagine’ singalong video. They mightn’t have been complaining about being stuck in quarantine, but they were slammed just as hard for not making a difference with their privileged platforms.

One Twitter user wrote, “hey celebs, we don’t want to be sung to. We want you to use a million or two of your money and order ventilators, masks, and gloves from  the manufacturers then donate them to a hospital. Or pay for the salaries of an entire staff at a bar, restaurant, or daycare.”

Yikes. While the global pandemic is bringing out the best in people, it’s also bringing out the worst. Ricky Gervais’ comments are just another helpful reminder to have a bit of perspective.
