Ellen DeGeneres Isn't Dead, Here's Why The #RIPEllen Death Hoax Is A Thing

Just the internet doing its thing again.

After laying low for a while following a heap of backlash over allegedly being an awful boss and her response to the Black Lives Matter protests, Ellen DeGeneres is back in the headlines because of some ridiculous #RIPEllen death hoax which in turn has led to speculation over how she is (don’t worry, she’s alive) and whether her show has been cancelled or not.

Speaking of Ellen DeGeneres, the GOAT team talk about all the drama surrounding her on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

So this wild death hoax all started when the hashtag #RIPEllen started trending on Twitter, prompting many people to wonder if this has something to do with Ellen DeGeneres’ state of health (again, she’s alive and well) or something about her show being cancelled.

With a heap of people falsely reporting that Ellen was dead and/or her show was cancelled, it was pretty tough to figure out exactly what was going on. But it quickly became apparent that it was all a dumb prank because the internet had a field day with a heap of #RIPEllen memes and jokes at the talk-show host’s expense.

So how did this whole #RIPEllen death hoax thing about Ellen DeGeneres start anyway?

Well there was some speculation that Ellen’s show a little while ago was going to be cancelled amidst falling ratings, though producers have since confirmed that the show is still sticking around. Despite denials that the show is gone, didn’t stop people from using the #RIPEllen hashtag to prematurely wish Ellen’s show goodbye.

The internet being the internet, some folks took this non-story and blew it up massively by turning it into the death hoax that’s got a heap of people super confused as to whether Ellen DeGeneres is alive or dead. She’s alive by the way.

This death hoax is the latest incident in what’s been a turbulent 2020 for Ellen DeGeneres. Not only has she been called out repeatedly for allegedly being an awful person behind her famous “be kind” persona, people haven’t been too pleased with how she’s dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of making tone-deaf jokes about being in isolation and how poorly she’s treated her staff.

But hey, Ellen is still alive and well at least and that’s the important thing. Her reputation though? Well that’s another matter entirely.
