After all the hooplah over the Grammys and the talented artists who deserved more attention from the increasingly-irrelevant music award show, it seems like the biggest snub wasn’t Lil Nas X but rather a 60-second bop titled ‘Dinosaurs In Love’ that was written on the fly by a three-year-old girl.
You wouldn’t think that a 60-second song about dinosaurs that’s sung by a little girl would garner much attention, but there’s more emotional substance stuffed into ‘Dinosaurs In Love’ than 90 percent of songs that are put out.
In what is best described as a Jurassic love tragedy, ‘Dinosaurs In Love’ tells the story of how two dinosaurs, well, fall in love. However, the fun they have together (which includes eating fruit and cucumbers) doesn’t last long because a “bing bang” comes and wipes them out. Pretty heavy – and surprisingly accurate – stuff for a three-year-old.
But all that is a prelude to an absolutely devastating plot twist at the end that’ll immediately turn on the waterworks. I won’t spoil it for you but just listen to it here, it’s only 60 seconds so you can spare the time.
Heartbreaking stuff, though I think the bigger takeaway here is that the kid isn’t the biggest fan of dinosaurs judging by how quickly she killed them off.
What’s almost as interesting as ‘Dinosaurs In Love’s’ lyrical content is how the song came about. According to musician Tom Rosenthal (via Buzzfeed News), his three-year-old daughter, Fenn, had no interest in dinosaurs whatsoever.
However, one day she just wandered into his studio and asked to record a song, which consists of her singing whatever comes to her mind. Since Fenn is, you know, three, recording ‘Dinosaurs In Love’ took a bit of time as she had a tendency to get bored and wander off before returning to sing some more things about dinosaurs.
The random dinosaur song ultimately came together in editing and the rest is now internet history as it quickly went viral (it’s already hit 1.1 million views at the time of writing).
While Tom is genuinely surprised at all the attention ‘Dinosaurs In Love’ has received, Fenn has “no idea” and has already moved on, presumably to come up with her next 60-second love tragedy banger.
It’s amazing how this random, made-up song about dinosaurs has more emotional substance and nuance than the two Jurassic World movies that have been released. Hey Colin Trevorrow, you better take notes for Jurassic World 3.
