In case you were nervous that Natalie Portman’s Mighty Thor would be the main character of Thor: Love and Thunder, you have nothing to worry about because director Taika Waititi has confirmed Chris Hemsworth is still going to be the movie’s star.
Waititi’s return to the Thor series was announced just a few days before the San Diego Comic-Con with the confirmation that Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson would return taking place at the event.
It was also announced, in what was possibly the biggest surprise of the event, that Natalie Portman would also be returning to the series as Jane Foster, who will become Mighty Thor.
This caused a lot of speculation about what would happen to Hemsworth’s Thor, who suffered from depression following the events of Avengers: Infinity War and became Bro Thor in Avengers: Endgame.
In an interview with MTV News, Waititi was asked who was the star of the film – Chris or Natalie – to which the director responded, “It’s Chris. It’s a Thor film. He is Thor, it’s a Thor film. She’s in it.”
He was also asked how the script for the film was coming along and in classic Waititi style, he said he was on page seven. It might be a joke, it might not be, but we do know Waititi is a busy guy nowadays so we’re just happy he’s returning to the Thor series at all.
There are many rumours at this stage about how Jane Foster becomes Mighty Thor, with some reports the female Thor will be Jane Foster from another timeline.
While many fans were excited to hear of the inclusion of Mighty Thor, others were worried about what it meant for Hemsworth’s Thor. At this stage, it isn’t known whether the Aussie actor has signed a new contract following Endgame or if he’s working with Marvel on a film-to-film basis.
Endgame’s final moments seemed to indicate Thor would be teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy so there’s an opportunity for Hemsworth to star in the third Guardians film as well.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set for release on November 5, 2021.
