There are many reasons why you may want to have a secret secondary Instagram account, especially if you’re a celebrity. Perhaps its for certain people’s eyes only or maybe you use it just for puppy content. But if you’re Lorde, you have a finsta because it was born out of a gag involving onion rings.
This whole thing started as a joke between Lorde and her friends when she was on tour. Seeing as how she was visiting a heap of places and onion rings were on every menu, someone (presumably) said to her “hey, you should make a funny joke Instagram account where all you do is rate all the onion rings you try!”
Whereas the specifics of how Lorde’s finsta was born isn’t quite clear, she and her friends thought it was a hilarious and next thing you know, @onionringsworldwide was born.
However, it didn’t take long before Newshub.co.nz started sleuthing around and noted a bunch of details that seemed a bit suss, like how the now-empty account was only followed by Lorde and her friends, how the locations of the now-deleted onion rings photos corresponded with the singer’s tour dates, and uh, how similar the fingers in the photos looked compared to Lorde’s.
The internet started getting suspicious and there was no official confirmation or denial about the finsta from Lorde’s management until she spilled the beans on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon.
Since the onion ring whistle was blown, there have been no instances or signs of another Lorde finsta, which is a total shame because her main Instagram account is, well, boring by comparison.
At the time of writing, there are only three posts on the profile, the most recent of which is dated April 6, 2018 and is a blurry captionless photo of who we presume is Lorde performing.
There aren’t any witty comments, critques or even a rating out of five stars on Lorde’s main, just three unremarkable posts with less substance than, well, an onion ring.
Perhaps Lorde has another secret finsta we have absolutely no idea about and she’s taking extreme measures to hide it from the world. Or maybe she just doesn’t bother with Instagram any more since she’s got other things on her plate, like apparently getting herself into jail or something.
Lorde’s joke finsta was fun while it lasted but it looks like she’s gone back to silently judging the quality of her onion rings off the grid like the rest of us plebs.
