Edgar Wright Might Be Directing The Next James Bond, Which Would Be The Best Thing To Happen To James Bond In Years

The director behind some of the most iconic genre films of the last few decades might be directing the most iconic action series of all time.

We here at GOAT make no secret to our love of Edgar Wright. The British director is responsible for some of the best films of the past couple of decades, from last year’s incredibly cool Baby Driver to the endlessly-quotable and sheer awesomeness of the Cornetto Trilogy.

Which is why rumours out of Hollywood this morning come as a particularly pleasant surprise: Edgar Wright is one of the front-runners to take over directing duties for the untitled 25th James Bond flick.

For those who need a refresher, because admittedly this saga has had as many plot twists as the most recent #lipspill: Trainspotting director Danny Boyle was originally set to helm the 25th 007 flick. It was also presumed to be Daniel Craig’s last one, with rumours that Idris Elba would finally fulfil the wishes of thirsty fans everywhere and don the famed tuxedo of the MI6 operative.

That all changed when Danny Boyle suddenly left the film this week over the generically-vague “creative differences”.

Now Deadline is reporting that Bond’s producers are in a frantic rush to find a replacement so that production can quickly get back on schedule to meet it’s projected November 2019 release date.

They’ve narrowed their options down to four possible directors: Wright, Jean-Marc Vallee, who is currently producing the critically acclaimed series Sharp Objects, David Mackenzie, who directed the Oscar-nominated thriller Hell And High Water, and indie filmmaker Yann Demange, whose second feature White Boy Rick is set to come out later this year.

As with any rumour, take all of this with a grain of salt. And it does sound like all of the possible choices would be amazing, at the end of the day.

But really, how awesome would an Edgar Wright Bond film be? As we explained earlier this week, it’d be downright amazing to see his visual style paired with the classic capers of the spy who likes martinis shaken, not stirred. And considering the most interesting thing to happen with James Bond over the last decade was an Adele song, Edgar Wright might just be the shot in the arm the franchise needs to elevate it into the world of 2018.

You’re welcome.
