IT Chapter Two Is So Terrifying That James McAvoy Had Nightmares Before He Started Filming

Still want to see it?

James McAvoy who plays the role of adult Bill in IT Chapter Two has revealed just how terrifying the movie is.

When McAvoy first read Stephen King’s IT as a teenager, it didn’t give him nightmares, but when he re-read it to get ready for the movie it really got to him.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, McAvoy said, “When I re-read It as an adult for the film, I actually had nightmares about Pennywise in a way that I never did as a child.”

No doubt this had something to do with seeing Bill Skarsgård’s horrifying makeup in the first film.

He added that King didn’t just want to scare readers, “He’s writing about a small American town, he’s writing about death, he’s writing about growing old, growing up. And the movie is very much about that. You could argue the first movie is as much Stand by Me and Goonies and all those things as it is a horror movie.”

In the movie, it’s been 27 years since the Losers Club made their pact to return to Derry should Pennywise return again. Bill is now a Hollywood screenwriter who is “very lost and drifting through life”. He can’t remember his childhood in Derry or his little brother Georgie who was dragged into a sewer drain by Pennywise.

Mike (Isaiah Mustafa) calls the gang to come back home after another tragedy hits the small town and they’re once again terrorised by Pennywise.

McAvoy reveals just how deeply he’s connected to the character, saying, “I’ve got these memories of my character as a young boy [from the first film].”

If you need more proof the movie is horrifying, one of the actresses from the film doesn’t even want to see it!

In the first teaser trailer for the movie, we see an adult Beverly (Jessica Chastain) returning to her former home and meeting the sweet old lady who lives there now.

Except, she’s not really just a sweet old lady, she’s a terrifying monster. That woman is played by Joan Gregson, who spoke to Empire Online and said that while she loved making the movie, she’s “scared to death” to watch the finished product.

“It’s my first horror, and I had a wonderful time. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Andy [Muschietti] and Jessica [Chastain]. I’m really looking forward to it – and I’m scared to death, actually, because I know there are lots of things that are just going to terrify me. One of my daughters is refusing to see it. I may jump out of my skin at some point.”

Chastain also revealed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that the movie contains a scene that may just have the most blood ever seen in a horror movie.

“OK, I’m going to say something, and I think I’m going to be in trouble, but I’m going to do it.”

“It might be a spoiler. But in the movie, there’s a scene that someone said on set that it’s the most blood that’s ever been in a horror film in a scene. And I’ll tell you, the next day I was like pulling blood out of my eyeballs. Fake blood.”

So, if you’re not OK with blood, we’d suggest you give this movie a miss…

The movie is set to run for a huge two hours and 45 minutes, so if you go see it in the cinema, make sure you pick one with comfy seats!
