'Thor: Ragnarok' Features An 'Eternals' Easter Egg We Never Noticed

Did you see it?

It turns out Thor: Ragnarok featured an Easter egg teasing Marvel’s Eternals, which is set for release later this year.

The Eternals comics were first created by Jack Kirby in 1976, giving him a chance to show off his artwork as well as introducing new cosmic mythology into the Marvel Universe.

Taika Waititi’s Ragnarok served as a love-letter to Kirby’s cosmic art with costume and set designers clearly influenced by his designs – the Grandmaster’s costumes, in particular, would have been recognisable to comic book fans.

It seems that Ragnarok’s inspiration may have served as foreshadowing with Marvel using designs taken from the Eternals and their cosmic creators The Celestials.

Now, one fan has taken to Reddit after spotting a specific Celestial Easter egg within Thor: Ragnarok.

Reddit user Initial_XD noticed a ship in the background of a scene where Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie hops from ship to ship. The ship was taken straight out of Eternals #2 and was piloted by a Celestial named Arishem.

The user shared a photo and wrote, “Hadn’t noticed this little Easter egg before…and just in times for the ETERNALS.”

ScreenRant reports that the Celestials have been reinvented for the MCU and will now be a cosmic race who used the Power Stone to judge entire worlds and civilisations but somehow became extinct.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Ego (Kurt Russell) was the last of the Celestials and possessed the power to manipulate matter on a fundamental level. This explains how Celestials can be as large as a planet – like Knowhere – or a normal-sized humanoid.

While the ship could simply be a cool Easter egg, it’s more likely to be foreshadowing according to ScreenRant. The Marvel Studios Visual Dictionary reveals the planet Sakaar, where the scene in Ragnarok takes place, is littered with corpses of Celestials.

There’s speculation that Eternals will serve as a prequel to the entire MCU and explain why the Celestials went extinct. It may also explain how the Celestial corpses ended up on Sakaar and how the ship got there.

The movie stars Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek and Gemma Chan among many others.

Whatever the story is, we’re going to have to wait a long time to find out, as Eternals isn’t out in cinemas until November.

The Brutal AF Way Joaquin Phoenix Lost All That Weight For 'Joker'

Don't try this at home.

Joker was probably the most unsettling film of 2019, but one of the most shocking scenes involved Joaquin Phoenix shirtless and crouched over with almost every bone in his back, shoulders and arms sticking out.

Phoenix certainly went through a crazy physical transformation for the film, losing almost 24kg for the role of the severely troubled Arthur Fleck.

CinemaBlend reports director Todd Phillips revealed exactly how Phoenix managed to drop all that weight so quickly – and it’s certainly not a diet we’d recommend.

Speaking on the Blu-ray for Joker, Phillips said he offered the actor a nutritionist to help him lose the weight, but Phoenix refused.

He explained, “It was already like June and he hadn’t started [losing weight] and we start shooting in September. And he’s like, 180 pounds [82kg]. He wasn’t fat but we’re talking about getting to 125 pounds [57kg].”

“And he goes ‘I got it, I got it.’ I go ‘You know we can hire a guy. I got this thing, this woman who’s a nutritionist, you might wanna…’ ‘No, no, that’s not how I do it.’ I go ‘How do you do it?’ He goes ‘I just stop eating and I starve myself.’ He just ate an apple a day for the whole summer.”

Let’s just hope that the whole one apple a day is a slight exaggeration. Phoenix himself told Access Hollywood, “It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and steamed green beans.”

Which, to be completely honest, doesn’t sound much better!

He added that he had worked with a doctor to ensure he was losing the weight safely, “It’s something I’ve done before and you work with a doctor regimented and overseen and safe.”

Phillips didn’t end up being much help to the actor and kept one of Phoenix’s favourite snack in his office while they worked.

“Todd did have these f**king pretzels that I love. And he’d just have bags of them in his office! And that was difficult,” Phoenix added.

The actor also spoke about how the movie made him feel, “It’s not an easy movie. And it’s unsettling and uncomfortable at times. But there are other times where I think you feel ecstatic,” he explained.

“It’s not always enjoyable, but it makes you feel– a really strong, emotional reaction. I think that’s what I look for in a film, certainly as an actor and I think as an audience member as well.”
