J-Lo And Shakira Have Some Tough Super Bowl Competition

Waiting for the night!

The Super Bowl is right around the corner which means it’s time for a phenomenal music performance in the middle of some random players playing sport! This year, we have the Latina queens, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. Honestly, we’re not ready.

We had a good ol’ yarn about Jennifer Lopez and her Oscars snub in this episode of It’s Been A Big Day For…

In a press conference, J-Lo and Shakira discussed some of the details they have planned for the big game, notably, they’re planning on honouring a basketball legend. “We’ll all be remembering Kobe (Bryant) on Sunday and celebrating life and diversity in this country,” Shakira told the press after Jennifer Lopez mentioned there would be a “heartfelt” tribute.

We couldn’t be more excited. As a result, we thought we’d reflect on some of the best Super Bowl Halftime shows in the past decade. Here are our top five.

5. Coldplay, Bruno Mars, Beyoncé

When Coldplay was announced as the Super Bowl headliner, fans weren’t sure what to think. Notorious for their heartbreaking ballads, like “Clocks” and “Yellow”, some wondered if we would be subject to a sombre Halftime Show. The result was the exact opposite. Joined by Beyoncé to perform “Formation” and Bruno Mars to perform “Uptown Funk”, the show was an upbeat success!

4. Katy Perry, Lenny Kravitz, Missy Elliott

This Super Bowl performance had something for everyone. With Katy Perry covering pop and dance, she recruited some help from Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz to cover rap and rock respectively. Highlights include Katy’s octave switch in the ‘I Kissed A Girl’ duet. We still get chills thinking about it.

3. Bruno Mars, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Bruno Mars is notorious for his infectious hits like ‘Uptown Funk’, ‘24K Magic’ and ‘That’s What I Like’, which makes it hard to believe he headlined the Super Bowl before any of those songs were even out. Taking the world’s biggest stage after pumping out only two albums, this talented musician, joined by rock legends RHCP, gave us one heck of a show

2. Lady Gaga

There’s been a notable shift towards pop music when it comes to the Super Bowl Halftime Show in recent years. It’s been met with some sceptics, but none shut them up as much as Lady Gaga. Taking the stage in Huston, Texas, the pop icon needed no special guests to keep the crowd entertained. Also, it marked the first time the word “transgender” was said during the Super Bowl broadcast. Gay rights!

1 Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child

Before the infamous Coachella performance, there was the 2013 Super Bowl. Queen B surpassed all expectations by opting for live vocals and minimal guests, unlike previous years. It had been almost a decade since the last Destiny’s Child album, and Yoncé herself treated us to a nostalgic reunion to end all reunions. Serious good luck to J-Lo and Shakira for their performance this weekend, this one’s going to be tough to beat.
