Henry Cavill Got So Into His Role In 'The Witcher' He Nearly Blinded Himself

Taking method acting to the next level.

If there’s one role Henry Cavill will never not be excited to talk about, it’s definitely Geralt on Netflix’s The Witcher (sorry Superman). In fact, Henry Cavill is so into playing Geralt that he once tried to push through an injury involving some contact lenses and nearly went blind because of it.

Talk about taking method acting to Daniel Day-Lewis levels.

Speaking of being blind, the GOAT team talk about how Kimye are on a totally different planet compared to the rest of us on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

Chatting to Vanity Fair about his process to get into the character of Geralt while filming The Witcher, Henry revealed that wanted his eyes to look “slightly terrifying” while also resembling cat’s eyes. This led to the selection of those wild contact lenses he wears on the show.

However, those contact lenses ended up being a pain in the arse for Henry as he recalled coming across a lot of volcanic dust when filming The Witcher at the Canary Islands and some of it got between the contacts and his eyes, resulting in an injury to Cavill’s baby blue eyes and a very real possibility of going blind.

Despite wanting to press on and deal with it because it’s part of the character, the on-set eye technician was having none of it.

“No I can’t look different off-camera or when the other actors are looking at me. It’s going to be more difficult for them. They’re accustomed [to] this look, and it’s all part of the design of the character so they have something to react to. [The on-set eye technician] said, ‘I don’t care. I’m taking the contacts out because you’re going to damage your eyes. I’m doing it. Otherwise I’m stopping shooting.’

“I was like, ‘Okay, okay, okay.’ Took the contacts out. When we went back to Budapest, she took me in to have my eyes checked. It turned out that whatever the dust was, volcanic, it ended up scratching my eye, because it got behind the contacts and was just rubbing there for however long.”

Ouch. No wonder why Geralt is so damn angry all the time.

Getting injuries and putting himself through hell while playing Geralt on The Witcher is becoming sort of a habit for Henry Cavill. There’s all the training he does, the dangerous dehydration routine for shirtless scenes, getting all beaten and scarred from the fight scenes, and now this eye thing.

But then again Henry is fantastic as Geralt and The Witcher has been a massive hit so perhaps there’s method to Cavill’s madness and choice of contact lenses.
