Anyone Else Super Confused About Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 'Hamilton' Movie Announcement?

I'm past patiently waiting.

The long-awaited dream of musical fans Down Under will be finally fulfilled in 2021 when Hamilton arrives in Australia. While we won’t be seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, we’ll end up seeing him throwing away his shot on the big-screen anyway as there are reports going around that a Hamilton movie featuring the original cast is coming soon.

Speaking of movies, the GOAT team break down the biggest talking points about the 2020 Oscars on It’s Been A Big Day For… below:

However, don’t believe those Hamilton movie headlines or reports wholeheartedly because the reality is a bit more confusing. To clear things up right off the bat, we are NOT getting a film adaptation of the musical starring the original cast so don’t get your hopes up on seeing a big-budget, cinematic staging of ‘My Shot’ or ‘The Room Where It Happens’.

It’s confusing but it’s understandable since both Lin-Manuel Miranda and the cast have been going around talking and tweeting about this hypothetical Hamilton movie, which in turn has whipped Hamil-fans all up in a frenzy.

So if we’re not going to get a Hamilton movie, what exactly are we getting? Is it an adaptation with other people playing the parts? Are the original cast doing something else? Is there going to be rapping involved?

Well Lin-Manuel Miranda has confirmed a bunch of times in the past that while a movie adaptation is not happening (yet), the Broadway version of Hamilton starring himself and the original cast has been filmed professionally.

So yes, there exists an actual “movie” of Hamilton with the original cast. However, it’s just a film of the Broadway show and not a new cinematic adaptation, hence Lin’s “you’re gonna see it with the original cast” comments.

With all that confusion all cleared up, the question now is when will be see this Hamilton “movie” and will there ever be a proper cinematic adaptation? As far as we know, the answers are “soon” and “maybe” respectively.

With the original Broadway show still selling out, there’s no business reason to release the Hamilton “film” just yet. And as for the adaptation, Lin-Manuel Miranda has said he wants as many people to see the musical as intended before even thinking about turning it into a movie. Plus musicals don’t necessarily translate well to the big screen. Just look at what happened to Cats.

So in short, we WILL see Hamilton with the original cast on the big screen in one form or another at some point in time. For now, we’re going to have to make do with the 2021 production that’s coming or jet off to New York City and hit up Broadway.
