Our New Catwoman Zoe Kravitz Was Once Told She Was Too 'Urban' For A Role In Dark Knight Rises

Seriously.

It was announced this week that Zoe Kravitz has been cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson in the title role.

Kravitz and Pattinson are the only roles that have been confirmed with Jonah Hill rumoured to play a villain (either the Riddler or the Penguin) and Jeffrey Wright, who will reportedly play Commissioner Gordon.

While it’s very exciting that Kravitz landed the role, it’s not the first time she’s tried be part of a Batman film. The Mad Max: Fury Road star had previously been keen to join Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, but was denied an audition for being too “urban”.

In 2015, Kravitz recounted the story to Nylon, revealing she wasn’t even given an audition for a small role.

“In the last Batman movie [The Dark Knight Rises], they told me that I couldn’t get an audition for a small role they were casting because they weren’t ‘going urban,'” she said at the time.

“It was like, ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ I have to play the role like, ‘Yo, what’s up, Batman? What’s going on wit chu?'”

She also told the story of when she landed a role in 2007’s The Brave One which was originally “written for a white Russian girl”.

“I auditioned, and they changed the role for me,” she said.

The idea that she wasn’t able to get an audition for The Dark Knight Rises due to her race is horrible, but it must make landing the role in The Batman that much sweeter for the star.

Kravitz already has some practice playing the role of Catwoman after voicing the character in The Lego Batman Movie.

We might not know the exact story The Batman will follow, but we do know that the Internet is ready to see Kravitz and Pattinson together onscreen.
