Avengers: Endgame Writer Confirms 'Old Steve' Theory That'll Make You Cry

You'll probably want to re-watch Captain America: Civil War immediately.

The writers of Avengers: Endgame brought Captain America’s (Chris Evans) story to a close in the best possible way – Steve Rogers got to marry Peggy Carter and live happily ever after thanks to some time travel.

But one of the writers has revealed not only did Cap get his happy ending, but there might be an old Steve cameo in the MCU already. Well, it’s at least what he’d like to believe.

According to ScreenRant, Christopher Markus confirmed a fan theory during the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 panel that will have you wanting to re-watch Captain America: Civil War.

Markus revealed that not only are there two versions of Steve in the MCU, but it wasn’t the first time we saw Old Steve and the pair actually crossed paths in Civil War.

Obviously, there’s a lot of complicated time travel logic in the film, but Markus and his co-writer Stephen McFeely chose to “close one eye” to the rules of science fiction to give Steve his happy ending.

“We’ll get to Captain America at the end of the movie, and whether that breaks our own rules… I mean we actually have a public disagreement with our directors. Again, it’s a playful one, but Stephen and I are just so taken with the idea that Steve went back and got to live his life.”

So, where could both Steves have crossed paths? One fan theory suggests both versions were at Peggy’s funeral which is seen in Civil War.

Old Steve lived through the events of the movies and means he is Peggy’s mystery husband. This also makes sense because Peggy’s mind and memory were failing her when young Steve visits her The Winter Soldier.

The fan theory is that old Steve was carrying Peggy’s casket alongside his younger self. In the video below you can see a white-haired pallbearer opposite Steve:

The theory had gone unaddressed until the SDCC panel with Markus, who said, “I would like to believe that through some sort of bulls**t time loop paradox –throw in the words you use when you’re bulls**ing science in a movie: ‘some sort of quantum paradox’ – that there are indeed two Captain Americas in the MCU timeline.

“That Steve Rogers who looped back into time has therefore always been there, and that he is living somewhere else in the movies you’re watching.

“And what I really like to believe is that there’s an old man sitting in back at Peggy’s funeral in Civil War, and that’s old Steve Rogers, watching young Steve Rogers, carry old Steve Rogers’s wife up to the front of the church. Can I explain it scientifically? Not really, no.”

If the cameo is approved by the writers – and it’s the version they want to believe – then we’ll happily believe it too!
