It Looks Like Zac Efron Quietly Removed His Most Embarrassing Tattoo Fail And Now I Miss It

Pete Davidson would never.

Recently we celebrated the fact that before Ariana Grande, Pete Davidson, Justin Bieber, and Halsey owned the regrettable tattoo space, Zac Efron was the king.

We are, of course, referring to Zac Efron’s iconic ‘YOLO’ tattoo, emblazoned on his hand.

The year was 2011, and the term ‘YOLO’ was only just coming into popularity as a wholesome acronym that declared ‘You Only Live Once’ as if it were a call to action. “Carpe diem!” it seemed to say. “Live your best life!” it suggested.

The term quickly went from genuine to ironic, mocked far and wide in the meme-iverse. But there it was, on golden boy Zac Efron’s hand, like a gentle reminder that we all make mistakes.

So it is with great sadness that we share the brutal truth: Zac Efron’s YOLO tattoo is gone.

It’s actually been gone for a while, missing from photos as far back as 2014. It might have disappeared from existence even earlier, and simply lived on in our memories for all this time.

As we saw when Ariana Grande accidentally got ‘Japanese style BBQ’ instead of ‘7 Rings’ inked on her hand, hand tattoos do fade. So maybe Zac’s YOLO tattoo simply came to the end of its natural life cycle. Or maybe he had it removed, we can’t say for sure.

But Zac Efron just seems too awesome to have his YOLO tattoo intentionally removed, so we are just going to live in the truth that it faded, and he misses it just as much as we do.

Never Forget Zac Efron Made A Bigger Tattoo Mistake Than Ariana, Pete Davidson And Bieber Combined

Zac Efron walked so they could run.

The last few years has been pretty big for celebrities getting tattoos that they (or at least we) would categorise as regrettable. Pete Davidson turned his Ariana Grande tribute tattoo into a disturbingly grim memento of their relationship. Ariana Grande ‘adapted’ her Pete Davidson tattoo for post-break-up closure. Halsey stirred up controversy by getting a giant Marilyn Manson tattoo. Justin Bieber got an entire word tattoo’d on his face.

Post Malone was… Post Malone.

Speaking of Post Malone and tattoos, the GOAT team talked with celebrity tattoo artist about Post and what he smells like on ‘It’s Been A Big Day For…’ below:

But before Ariana, Pete, Bieber and the rest, there was Zac Efron.

Zac Efron came into our lives as the golden boy of Disney’s High School Musical franchise, (even though Zeke was unquestionably better.) But naturally, as he grew up, he took some wrong turns.

Never forget that Zac Efron got a tattoo that said ‘YOLO’.

The year was 2011, and the term ‘YOLO’ was only just coming into popularity. It was a wholesome acronym that declared ‘You Only Live Once’ as if it were a call to action. “Carpe diem!” it seemed to say. “Live your best life!” it suggested.

But the term quickly went from genuine to ironic, mocked far and wide in the meme-iverse.

But alas, it was too late for Zefron, who already had ‘YOLO’ inked into the skin on his hand.

Whether the tattoo was a sober decision or Zac Efron “woke up with it”, as he attested to The Evening Standard in 2012, the YOLO tat is a key moment in the history of celebrity tattoo mistakes.

So when we think of this great era of over-zealous celebrity tattoos, don’t forget that Zac Efron was here first, a visionary ahead of his time.

What Ariana Grande’s Adaption Of Her Pete Davidson Tattoo Can Teach Us About Closure

"Not a cover up just evolvin."

Even though Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson called off their engagement last October, that does not erase all the positive things about the time spent together. A relationship ending does not devalue the relationship itself, and that’s something Ariana has chosen to honour in her latest tattoo.

It’s no secret that Ariana and Pete Davidson got a lot of ink to celebrate their relationship during their time together, and since breaking up they’ve both covered up some of those tattoos. Pete Davidson covered up an Ariana tribute tattoo on his neck with quite a morbid transformation, and it’s fair for everyone to deal with their heartbreak in their own way.

But Ariana has revealed some new ink that has transformed one of her suspected Pete Davidson tattoos. The original tattoo was one that says ‘Always’ below her ribs, and it was presumed to be written in Davidson’s handwriting.

Obviously in the context of that relationship ending, the sentiment ‘always’ could be considered a bit ironic and just sad. But Ariana has added a branch of leaves growing along her rib cage and enveloping the old tattoo, almost like a frame. She showed off her new tattoo on Instagram with a comment about how she’s ‘evolvin’.

“post run thrus, 3 am with @girlknewyork 🙂 not a cover up just evolvin ? also, our show opens tomorrow. i love u and i’m so grateful. see u soon.” the post reads.

By featuring the original ‘Always’ tattoo inside of the leaf of a branch, the new ink now frames her relationship with Pete Davidson as a phase that is a part of her life and not something she wants to erase. It’s like Ari is turning a ‘new leaf’, and embracing her history as well as her future, and it’s a pretty admirable way to deal with a break up that was so dramatic and publicly scrutinised.

Complete respect to Ariana for this mature example of how closure does not mean erasure.
