Ah, Eurovision. Love it or hate it, there’s no denying it’s one of the weirdest singing competitions on the planet. And, it’s about to get even weirder.
Today, Netflix has announced they’re making Eurovision, a comedy starring and written by comedic great Will Ferrell.
Netflix confirmed the project to Buzzfeed News, adding that it will be co-written by Andrew Steele, a writer on Saturday Night Live.
Thanks to his singing cameo in Step Brothers, we all know Ferrell has the “voice of an angel”, it’s like “a combination of Fergie and Jesus” – so we’re expecting some hardcore vocal gymnastics, the type that’ll rival 2018 Eurovision Finalist Netta Barzilai.
Ferrell has been a long-time fan of Eurovision and was spotted in the crowd at this year’s semi-final, obviously soaking in those wild, sparkly vibes, doing some research and just casually paying out an entire country…
Just bumped into Will Ferrell backstage at Eurovision. Seriously. Asked if he had a second to chat to Australia- he replied “every country BUT Australia” and laughed. Well played! @SBSEurovision

But not everyone is cheering. A few people feel as though Eurovision’s unique charm cannot be simplified into a film and this inherently European tradition doesn’t need to be Americanised, along with everything else in the world.
Whoa, whoa, back off, America. Not yours.https://t.co/kerrtYoZCP

But look, if anyone can do a tastefully executed tribute to a gloriously weird, slightly niche event with a passionate following…
