Heineken Has Released A Weed Beer, So Those Of You Who Are Sick Of Getting Drunk On Beer Can Finally Get High On Beer

When Heineken said that they wanted to make more non-alcoholic drinks, this isn't what we had in mind.

Americans are a weird bunch.

They’ve given us some great stuff, like potato chips, light bulbs, and Sister Act 2.

It’s not all good. They also have a hateful Twistie for a leader, their addiction to the imperial measurement system is a bit peculiar, and don’t even get me started on the gun thing.

However, there’s one area where our yankie mates to the north have got it all over us, and that, my friends, is when it comes to the legality of weed.

Oh, what could have been…

Yep, no matter how backwater our American chums may be on many topics, their stance on legalising marijuana is to be commended.

Recreational marijuana use is already legal in nine states in America, and not just the uber cool, tourist states either. We’re talking Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.

Being able to finally purchase safe drugs in a safe way has already reduced arrest rates and generated over ten billion dollars for the US economy – and big companies are starting to take note of this booming industry.

Talking on the phone whilst driving, however…

This week, Heineken was the first major company to launch a beer made with marijuana instead of hops.

They’ve named it Hi-Fi Hops, and they’re releasing it under their umbrella brand, Lagunitas (a smaller brewery that Heineken acquired last year), and they claim “The IPA-inspired sparkling water is free of alcohol, calories and carbs,” and yes, it contains THC – the active ingredient in marijuana.

So, it’s in a can, and tastes a little like beer… but it’s basically flavoured weed water.

You can check out their launch video below, but fair warning: it’s basically a TV commercial.

It may seem like a weird move from Heineken, but weed beer could be a massive earner for the entire beer industry, which isn’t doing too well these days.

Don’t get me wrong, they’ve got way more money than the GDP of several small countries, but beer sales have been on a steady decline for the last few years, as younger drinkers are more health conscious and clued-in than their predecessors.

Weed sales, on the other hand, are booming. So, it makes perfect sense for more beer brewers to hop in (sorry, couldn’t help myself) to the new and exciting market of weed-based beverages.

I don’t know where you magic pixies came from, but I like your pixie drink.

Of course, marijuana is still illegal down here in Australia, so don’t expect to see icy cold cans of Hi-Fi Hops in the beer fridge at your local bottle-o just yet.

For those of you who find yourself touring the land of the free, pop into a marijuana dispensary, ask for a can of Hi-Fi Hops, and let me know how it tastes.

You won’t be allowed to bring it back home, but with a little luck, we’ll all be cracking weed tinnies in no time.
