PSA: Potatoes Are Not The Devil Of Your Winter Diet

Frankly, they deserve more respect.

Potatoes are literally the best thing in the world, there’s no doubt about it. Whether you like to eat them fried and on the side of your burger, or covered in mayo and served up with some salad, potatoes are the highlight of any dish. And that’s a fact that you simply cannot deny.

Seeing low-carb diets, kale salads and juice cleanses all over our timelines is truly saddening. Why are potatoes the devil of all these so-called “diets”? Because ultimately, they’re not bad for us. In fact, they’re a great winter food. Here are just a few reasons why.

They’re Comforting AF

Comfort food exists for a reason and there’s no better choice when it comes to comfort food than potatoes. Their creamy, carby texture provides us with a warmth which is unmatched by any jumper or blanket. And for that, we are forever indebted to the root vegetable.

They Make Every Dish Taste Better

You can’t tell us that when you order a chicken parmy and chips at the pub that the chips aren’t your favourite part. You just can’t. Whether we’re talking salty crinkle-cut fries or creamy, buttery mash, potatoes are always enjoyed more than a protein counterpart. Which brings us to our next point.

They’re Versatile

Baked? Mashed? Boiled? Potatoes can do it all. There is literally no other vegetable that you will walk past at your local Coles or Woolies that is more versatile than a potato. Potatoes can be sweet, savoury, soft, crunchy – the options are endless. The only thing a potato cannot be, is bad.

They’re Affordable & Easy To Cook

When it comes to choosing what’s for dinner, two questions come to mind; what is easy to cook and what can we afford? Ultimately, potatoes are the answer to both of these questions. Why spend a ridiculous amount of money on crazy fad diets that influencers are promoting when potatoes are the cheapest and easiest answer.

They Have Heaps Of Health Benefits

Finally, we need to address the misconception that potatoes are bad for us. Did you know that potatoes are better than bananas in terms of potassium and they rank above blueberries for Vitamin C? Yeah. So, next time you question about how healthy potatoes actually are, just remember that they have fewer carbs than rice and pasta when it comes to fibre and they are virtually fat-free.

So, if you’re ever stuck on what you should have for dinner, just consult the advice of The Wiggles, because the answer – almost always – is going to be ‘Hot Potato, Hot Potato.’
