Monica's Best Plot Line In Friends Was Almost Cut Because Men Are Prudes

The one where the bosses tried to slut-shame Monica.

Part of Monica’s charm on Friends is the fact she makes no apologies for who she is, her sex life and her excessive cleanliness. Well it turns out that NBC – the network that owns the TV show – wasn’t too fond of Monica initially, especially the sex stuff, and tried to get the writers to scrap one of her best storylines.

Here we go…

Friends co-creator David Crane spilled the beans to EW and revealed that NBC head Don Meyer wasn’t too pleased about Monica’s plot in the pilot episode where she sleeps with some dude on the first date.

Despite the showrunners holding their ground amidst Meyer’s pearl-clutching cries of “no one’s going to like her!” the NBC head tried to strong-arm them into changing Monica’s storyline with some good ol’ slut-shaming.

Director James Burrows planned to have a live audience give feedback on the Friends pilot and NBC decided to get them to fill out a ridiculously “skewed” questionnaire about Monica that asked stuff like “When she does this, is she a trollop? Is she a slut?”

Can’t say we blame you, Monica.

Happily, the audience all responded with a “nah, we still like Monica, sex and all,” and Meyer was basically forced to let the Friends showrunners do what they want at that point.

But being the petty little prude that he is, the NBC head got one last dig in by expressing his delight in the resolution of Monica’s story (she gets screwed over by the dude she sleeps with), which didn’t exactly go down well with Friends co-creator Marta Kauffman.

“Then Don got on board because he said, ‘Well I’m okay with it because she gets what she deserves when the guy sort of screws her over.'”

“I could see the steam coming out of [co-creator] Marta’s [Kauffman] nose. And I’m tap-dancing going, ‘But you’re okay with it! So if you’re okay with it then we’re good, let’s move on, yay!'”

But Friends ultimately got the last laugh in because Monica’s story in the pilot was untouched, she (and the rest of the cast) quickly became some of TV’s most beloved characters ever, and the show became something of a trailblazer in the depiction of sex on television.

Clutch your pearls at that, Don Meyer.

Is Joaquin Phoenix's Nickname For Fiance Rooney Mara A Hint At Their Kinky Sex Life?

Or it could just be Joaquin Phoenix being Joaquin Phoenix.

Joker star Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara have been a couple longer than most people realise and so it’s pretty natural to expect them to have cutesy nicknames for each other. As it turns out, Joaquin’s pet name for Rooney is less cute and more “oh, they definitely have a kinky sex life.”

Commodus approves of this.

After receiving the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival for Joker, Joaquin gave a shout out to Rooney in his acceptance speech (via Us Weekly):

“One last thing, somewhere here, I don’t know where, is a filthy dragon, and I want to rip its wings off and fasten a blanket and sleep with it forever. I love you. Thank you.”

Uh, what?

A “filthy dragon?”

It’s definitely a reference to Rooney’s famous role as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo but where does the “filthy” part come in?

And why on earth does Joaquin want to “rip its wings off and fasten a blanket and sleep with it forever?” That sounds a bit unsavoury.

Daenerys disapproves of this.

We’re not going to pretend to know what goes on in their relationship since they’re super private with their personal lives and they’re definitely within their right to not reveal anything.

But one can’t help but think that this whole “filthy dragon” thing is a glimpse into what is presumably an incredibly kinky sex life. If Joaquin’s comfortable calling Rooney by that nickname out in public, imagine what he calls her when they’re in bed.

There’s also the possibility that we’re reading too much into this “filthy dragon” name and it’s nothing more than Joaquin Phoenix doing his usual Joaquin Phoenix schtick.

Either way, here’s the big question: If Rooney Mara is “filthy dragon,” what on earth is Joaquin’s nickname? If we go by the established naming convention, it’s probably going to be something like “creepy psycho clown” or “seedy Jesus.”

Millie Bobby Brown Wrote A Fanfic And Netflix Gave Her A Movie Deal, Hbu?

Time to dust off all those Twilight scribbles from high school and call up Netflix.

Since Stranger Things 4 won’t be hitting Netflix anytime soon, Millie Bobby Brown has plenty of time on her hands and she’s decided to spend it by writing some fanfiction and uh, *checks notes* turning it into a movie.

Recreation of the movie’s development process.

According to The Wrap, the Stranger Things star will be developing and producing a film for Netflix based on an original fanfiction story she wrote with her older sister.

Titled A Time Lost, the film revolves around a long-standing feud between two Long Island families that escalates when one of the teenage daughters is diagnosed with cancer.

That… sounds like a pretty intense story to come out of the brain of a 15-year-old teenage girl. At least it’s not Twilight.

Okay, we’re getting too judgy about the whole “Millie Bobby Brown wrote some fanfiction and is making a movie out of it” thing so let’s look at it pragmatically.

Yes she and her older sister wrote a story that seems to be well beyond her years, but the film’s actual script will be written by Anna Klassen so there will be an experienced writer onboard to make sure the project isn’t just some scribbles from the diary of a teenager.

Besides, Netflix wouldn’t be giving MBB a movie deal like this without ensuring she is surrounded by people to help make it not suck so let’s not give it the doom and gloom treatment (yet).

Producing and writing a movie isn’t easy, let alone doing it when you’re 15, so the fact that she’s doing it at all is quite remarkable.

Let’s also not forget the fact that Millie Bobby Brown is only 15. That’s an age where it’s typical to broaden your horizons and to fail and succeed and a bunch of things so let’s just see how this all pans out.
