Everyone Is About To Re-Watch The OG ‘Skins’ Thanks To TikTok

The most iconic theme song.

TikTok is full of weird and wonderful content, and tbh, it’s replaced a Vine-shaped hole in a lot of our lives. Another reason to love TikTok is the platform’s ability to resurface the most beautifully nostalgic moments of our childhoods – for example, TikTok’s latest obsession with the UK teen series Skins.

Skins left our TV screens six years ago, but it’s made a recent comeback on TikTok with users trying to replicate Effy’s perfectly messy makeup, Cassie’s distinctive “wow” and Sid’s awkwardness.

ICYMI – and what a shame that is – Skins was a 2007 comedy-drama series that followed a group of teenagers living in Bristol, England. The show dealt with everything from substance abuse to sexuality, teenage pregnancy, eating disorders, and mental illness.

The show was real, raw, had a great soundtrack and also featured a cast of fresh-faced actors who have since hit the big-time, including Dev Patel, Nicholas Hoult, Kaya Scodelario and Jack O’Connell.

In 2015, Dev Patel told Newsbeat his career wouldn’t be anywhere without Skins. “My career started off because Danny Boyle’s daughter was a fan of the show, that is how I got an audition for Slumdog [Millionaire].

In fact, one of the best parts of Skins, was the fact that they held open auditions for the cast. “We felt if we had young people playing characters the same age as themselves, and those actors weren’t too trained, it would have a more natural feel,” co-creator Bryan Elsley told Newsbeat.

Skins was such a success that MTV attempted to reversion the series for the U.S. with an all-American cast. Sadly, the American version of Skins was met with criticism from fans who called it “tragic” and “the worst.”

Quite clearly some things are best left alone.

Fast-forward to 2019 and Skins is having another moment in the sun, thanks to TikTok. If that’s not proof of a timeless classic, I don’t know what is.

BRB, watching Skins again.
