Tinder Went Down On Us For A Few Hours This Morning Which Wasn’t As Fun As It Sounds

Like basically everything that’s gone wrong in 2018, it was Facebook’s fault.

Unless you are the thirstiest commuter alive and love a good morning swipe session on your train to work, you probably didn’t notice that Tinder was broken for a few hours earlier today.

But the Americans noticed. Oh boy, did they ever notice.

Users were logged out of their accounts and then thrown into an endless error loop when they tried to log back in.

It turns out that the issue was related to Facebook’s newly announced changes to their API, AKA the thing that lets third-party developers access your data, AKA the thing they’ve just restricted because it’s been getting them in trouble for weeks on end because it was super creepy and also probably helped Trump get elected.

Like Bumble and OKCupid, users log into Tinder with the Facebook accounts, which is designed to ensure people are more likely to use their real names and photos. Unlike Bumble and OKCupid, Tinder collects and displays your interests (i.e. pages you’ve Liked) – so this difference might have been what made Tinder glitch out.

The problem was fixed within a few hours, but users found even once they were back in, all their matches had disappeared.

The login loop issue was poor timing – or perhaps a genius move – given that Tinder also announced today that users will soon be able to add two-second video “loops” (similar to a Boomerang, Apple Live Photo or GIF) to their profiles.

They’re also upping the number of photos or loops you can put on your profile to nine.

You know what that means: the countdown to Bumble introducing three-second loops begins now.
