It’s been a big day for… Listening to...

The New Theme Song For The Lego Movie 2 Is Literally Designed To Torture You, Which Is Not Awesome

But is it a banger?

The Lego Movie 2 has a lot going for it: jokes roasting Chris Pratt’s career, Mad Max shoutouts, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, a cameo by a minifig Ruth Bader Ginsburg…

Now it also has a banger by the funniest man in EDM, Dillon Francis, featuring AutoTune king T-Pain and adorable 11-year-old rapper That Girl Lay Lay.

The entire song is about how catchy it is – it seems it’s used in the movie as an intergalactic torture or mind control tool, judging by the above clip. Pratt, Alison Brie (who voices Unikitty), Elizabeth Banks and Crazy Rich Asians‘ Jimmy O. Yang all insist that they’re suffering horribly under the song’s catchy, catchy influence.

“It’s so catchy / catchy / it’s such a catchy song” goes the hook.

But it’s no ‘Everything Is Awesome’ – the Tegan & Sara/Lonely Island collab from the first Lego Movie that even scored a Best Song Oscar nomination.

Specifically, instead of being an insanely catchy pop tornado with a thick layer of irony, it’s basically ‘The Song That Doesn’t End’ crossed with a LMFAO B-side, but… not as catchy as that.

And yes, it’s hard to make a family-friendly face-melter of a track, but it quite simply doesn’t go hard enough, or, well, actually get stuck in your head. I just listened to it twice through and my brain has already replaced it with ‘I Know A Song That Gets On Everybody’s Nerves’.

Honestly, if they really wanted to break brains and torture souls, they should have hired Lay Lay to add a verse on a ‘Baby Shark’ remix instead.

Actually, if you really hate yourself, you can sing ‘Baby Shark’ over the top of ‘Catchy Song’ to create a truly maddening, half-arsed Frankenbanger.

I’m so sorry.
