The Makers Of The Infamous Sexy Handmaid’s Tale Costume Actually Specialise In Sexy Dystopian Costumes That Make Halloween Scarier Than Ever

Apparently in the hellscape that is 2018, anything is fair game?

Last week we were all in awe of the wildly inappropriate Sexy Handmaid’s Tale costume that was being advertised online by lingerie and costume shop Yandy.com. They’ve since taken the controversial costume off-market, but we will never forget the how comedically terrible the sexy-oppressed-woman Halloween look truly was.

Under his eye.

Well, a deeper look into Yandy’s costume collection reveals that they in fact seem to specialise in making light of icons that represent how messed up our society has become. It’s like ‘dystopia, but make it sexy’ is a design policy that Yandy thought was a good idea.

Starting with this Sexy Op-Ed Anonymous costume – a fun take on the recent New York Times exposé written by an anonymous White House insider that chronicled just how f**ked up the American President Donald Trump really is. LOL cute!

Or you can really lean into the dark side of Halloween with this Sexy Fake News costume! Raise awareness about the misinformation crisis and the damaging affects of propaganda, but do it looking hot!

And if the world is going to objectify 2016 presidential candidate Hilary Clinton for being a woman, then why not jump on board that train and get around this Sexy Capitol Hill costume? This must be what progress looks like – right?

But what’s worse than making light of the fictional-oppression of Handmaid’s Tale or any political scandal is the fairly ubiquitous trend of dressing up as Native Americans.

Yandy has six whole pages of sexualised costumes based on Native American people’s traditional dress, listed under the category ‘Indians’ to make matters worse.

Unfortunately I can’t even pretend to find this funny, because as ridiculous as it is to dress up as a group of people that face oppression in real life, it’s far too common. From blackface to Geisha’s and everything in between, the fact that wearing an already-stigmatised culture as a costume is offensive has been made very clear, so we should be way past sexy Pocahontas by now.

I was willing to look past one or two weirdly niche dystopian Halloween costumes but clearly Yandy doesn’t know where the line is.

The moral of the story is: don’t wear offensive costumes! Sounds good.
