Ash Barty's First Reaction To Winning The French Open Makes Us Love Her Even More

A class act both on and off the court.

Ash Barty has become the first Australian to win a French Open singles title in 46 years after beating Czech teen Marketa Vondrousova 6-1 6-3 during the final in Paris. She is also the first Indigenous Australian to win since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won in 1971.

Barty was overcome with emotion after winning the match early Sunday morning, and as any Aussie would, she dropped an F-bomb before sinking to her knees.

The tennis superstar is being praised for a moment of pure class after giving a shoutout to Sam Stosur, the last Aussie to win a major singles title after winning the US Open in 2011. Stosur lost the French Open final in 2010 and Barty made sure to mention her as she accepted her trophy.

Barty was asked if she was inspired by other female players before her like Margaret Court (who has caused controversy in recent years after making comments against homosexual players), she side-stepped the question, instead choosing to praise Stosur.

“It’s a special place for Australia players. Obviously Sam has done so well and she’s been so close before so I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve been able to achieve and it’s been such an incredible two weeks.”

Stosur took to Instagram to congratulate Ash, writing, “Massive CONGRATULATIONS to @ashbar96 on your incredible win today! So happy and proud of you!! Always knew you would achieve this incredible success! You have such a gift and determination and now the trophy to show for it all!!”

Congratulations once again to Ash and thank you for being a class act on and off the court.
