Even Taika Waititi Has No Idea Who All The Characters Are In 'The Suicide Squad'

And he's in the film!

James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has a huge cast playing a bunch of mysterious roles – so mysterious, in fact, that even the actors don’t know who everyone’s playing!

Gunn took to Instagram in September to reveal the cast of the film included people like Taika Waititi, Idris Elba, John Cena, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, Pete Davidson, Sean Gunn, Michael Rooker, and Storm Reid, as well as a bunch of people returning to the sequel like Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Viola Davis.

Waititi has been a busy man with a lot of projects in the pipeline including Jojo Rabbit, Next Goal Wins, Thor: Love and Thunder and The Suicide Squad, in which he plays an unknown character.

Speaking with Wired, Waititi said that he knows he’s in The Suicide Squad, but that’s about it.

“We’re mates and James said, ‘Come and do this thing,'” he says. “James is brilliant, and it’s just such a crazy big list of people. But I have no idea what any of them are doing.”

That’s all we get?! Either Waititi legitimately doesn’t know what’s going on in the film or he’s very good at avoiding spoilers.

Some fans were left disappointed when the cast announcement didn’t include Jared Leto as the Joker, Gunn explained why that was in an Instagram Q&A.

He said, “No one but me and a few others know all the characters in the movie, but if the Joker isn’t in the film, I don’t think it would be strange as he isn’t a part of the Suicide Squad in the comics.”

This doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t make a cameo, but we’re not holding our breath for it.

Robert Pattinson's Batman Voice Is Inspired By Willem Dafoe's Drunken Lighthouse Keeper

“I think Batman has a sort of pirate-y kind of voice."

Before Robert Pattinson can begin work on The Batman, he’s doing press for another film called The Lighthouse, also starring Willem Dafoe, and it seems as though Pattinson has taken some inspiration from Dafoe for his next role.

Speaking with Access Hollywood, Pattinson revealed he was inspired by Dafoe’s drunken lighthouse keeper character when it came down to nailing his voice for the role as the Caped Crusader.

When asked if he’d been practising his Batman voice, Pattinson said, “Willem’s voice in [The Lighthouse] was quite inspiring for it, to be honest… It is pretty similar, the voice I’m gonna do, to Willem’s.”

He then offered a small playful growl as an example, before adding, “I think Batman has a sort of pirate-y kind of voice. I think they’re really suited.”

To be fair, Dafoe’s voice in the film does have a certain Batman-y sound to it:

Nailing the voice for Batman is pretty damn important, I mean, we all still remember Christian Bale’s gravelly whisper-growl that he put on.

In another interview with the BBC (via Twitter), Pattinson said he wants the movie to be “frightening”, and with Dafoe’s voice as inspiration, we have no doubt about that!

“I wanted to do something on a big stage, and so I ended up doing Chris Nolan’s movie [Tenet], which I was really, really happy about at the beginning of this year. And then Batman was kind of a surprise to me.

“Now that I’m starting to get into it, I don’t want to approach it as kind of a big studio thing where all you’re really doing is thinking about your trailer. I want to approach it in exactly the same way [as The Lighthouse], I want it to be frightening, I want it to be something you lose yourself in,” he explained.

He went on to say, “It’s more difficult to do because it’s such a familiar character to lots of people, but… I think if you can find a way to lose yourself in it, I think that’s really exciting.”

Director Matt Reeves has previously said he wants to focus more on the character as a detective, which other movies haven’t really done before, but could very much lend itself to the idea of the movie being frightening.

The Batman will also star Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Paul Dano as The Riddler.

This Is What Paul Dano Could Look Like As The Riddler In 'The Batman'

Spoiler alert: It's very different to Jim Carrey's version!

It was announced last week that Paul Dano will be playing Edward Nashton AKA The Riddler in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. And while some Batman fans might not know what to expect from him, Dano has proven he’s a great choice for the villain after starring in films like There Will Be Blood, Prisoners, 12 Years A Slave among many others.

In case you’re still struggling to picture him in the role, Bosslogic has taken to Instagram to share what they believe Dano will look like as The Riddler – and it’s totally on point.

You can also see Robert Pattinson in character as Batman in the background of the photo.

Dano’s outfit is obviously very different from Jim Carrey’s version of the character who wore a bright green catsuit in Batman Forever.

In Bosslogic’s photo, Dano is seen wearing the character’s trademark bowler hat, jacket and tie, and there isn’t any crazy green or purple taking over the look. There’s just the one question mark on his tie as opposed to Carrey’s outfit which was covered in them, and it’s probably a lot closer to how Reeves sees the character in his Batman universe.

Reeves has previously said he wants to dive into the idea of Batman being the greatest detective in the world, so having the Riddler and all the puzzles that come with him as part of the movie should be a lot of fun.

After creating Dano’s look for the film, Bosslogic also shared a photo of the way he envisions Zoe Kravitz to look as Catwoman and totally nails it again.

Jonah Hill was reportedly in the running to play either The Riddler or The Penguin in the flick, but it was believed he and the studio couldn’t agree on which character he’d play.

Variety reports the talks dragged on for so long, the filmmakers began speaking with Dano on the side and when Hill passed on the role, Dano was cast.

It’s believed that Jeffrey Wright will be joining Pattinson, Kravitz and Dano in the film as Commissioner Jim Gordon.

The Batman is set for release in June 2021.
