Daisy Ridley has confirmed something about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that will make a lot of fans very happy – we’re going to find out the truth about who Rey’s parents really are.
In The Last Jedi, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) told Rey her parents were simply “filthy junk traders” who sold her for drinking money and were buried in unmarked graves.
This was very disappointing to fans who thought she might be from one of the main Star Wars families and be a Skywalker, Kenobi, Solo or Palpatine.
Rian Johnson, who directed The Last Jedi, has defended the reveal and previously told Entertainment Weekly it wasn’t about “wish fulfilment”.
“I think back to the ‘I am your father’ moment with Vader and Luke, and the reason I think that lands is not because it’s a surprise or a twist but because it’s the hardest thing Luke and thus the audience could hear at that moment.”
“It turns someone into a bad guy that you just hate and want to kill into suddenly, Oh my God, this is a part of our protagonist. We have to start thinking of this person in more complex terms. We need to start thinking in terms of a redemption arc.”
“In our movie, it’s kind of the opposite. The easiest thing for Rey and the audience to hear is, ‘Oh yeah, you’re so-and-so’s daughter’. That would be wish fulfilment and instantly hand her a place in this story on a silver platter.”
He added, “The hardest thing for her is to hear she’s not going to get that easy answer. Not only that, but Kylo is going to use the fact that you don’t get that answer to try and weaken you so you have to lean on him. You’re going to have to find the strength to stand on your own two feet and define yourself in this story.”
Now, in an interview with USA Today, Ridley was asked whether there could be more to her parents in the next instalment and she said, “(Director J.J. Abrams) did say the question is answered. So at the end of the film, you do know what the dealio is.”
Ridley is referring to when Abrams told Good Morning America, “I will say there is more to the story (of Rey’s parentage) than you’ve seen.”
Considering the fact Luke Skywalker is dead, could the title for the movie be a hint about Rey’s family?
