The Star Wars Machine Goes Into Overdrive With Three New Movies In The Works

They'll be released from 2022.

A new Star Wars trilogy is in the works with the first film set to be released just before Christmas in 2022, with sequels set to follow in 2024 and 2026 following the conclusion of the current trilogy with The Rise of Skywalker.

Yahoo! reports Disney was planning on leaving the Star Wars franchise alone for while following the release of spinoffs Rogue One and Solo.

Disney CEO, Bob Iger, told Bloomberg there’d be a “hiatus” in the series, saying there was “too much, too fast” with the new trilogy and the spinoffs.

“We will take a pause, some time, and reset,” he said, “because the Skywalker saga comes to an end with this ninth movie. There will be other Star Wars movies, but there will be a bit of a hiatus.”

It’s unknown at this stage what the new films will be about, but Yahoo! reports Rian Johnson, who directed The Last Jedi, is working on something, with reports D.B. Weiss and David Benioff, the Game of Thrones show creators, are also working on something, which could be a show.

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the GoT showrunners and said, “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars. They’re working very closely with Rian.”

She also added that the new films will be set far apart from the Skywalker dynasty storyline.

“We’re looking at whether we can move massively in one direction of the other. It’s still Star Wars, and holding on to the DNA of what George created is still very important to us.

“I think this is a huge opportunity to step into the galaxy in a little bit different part of the timeline.”

Rumours suggest the films might focus on the Old Republic strand of the Star Wars world, which would be set thousands of years before the Skywalker storyline.

However, it could be that the new films aren’t a trilogy, but three standalone films like Rogue One.

Only time will tell!
