The Star Wars franchise is about to get a shot in the arm from an unexpected source because Disney has managed to rope in Marvel’s MVP to develop a new movie.
Having spent the last decade or so building the Marvel Cinematic Universe into a cultural and money-making behemoth, Kevin Feige is now turning his attention towards Star Wars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Feige will be working alongside long-time Lucasfilm producer Kathleen Kennedy to develop a new Star Wars film together, which will be part of a new “wave of projects set in the universe.”
While this comes a bit of a surprise to some, it makes perfect sense to rope Kevin Feige into a valuable franchise like Star Wars.
Not only is the Marvel boss a massive fan of Star Wars, he’s proven himself to be quite the good movie producer. You don’t bring to life 23 Marvel movies (and counting) that have made more money than the GDP of several countries while cultivating enough pop-culture goodwill to last several lifetimes without knowing something about making a good movie.
As for what this means for Lucasfilm and Marvel, The Hollywood Reporter reports that nothing will change in terms of leadership roles and Feige is apparently coming onboard Star Wars because he just wants to make a movie.
Speaking of Feige’s movie, while no details have been released about this project (unsurprisingly since it’s early days), it is reported that he has a “major actor” in mind for a specific role “when and if” he makes his Star Wars movie.
With Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss helming new movies, The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson working on his own trilogy, a bunch of limited series shows on Disney+ and now Kevin Feige onboard to make a movie, it seems like the future is bright for Star Wars.
It’s still very early days and we definitely won’t hear a thing about Feige’s movie for ages but the force is strong with this decision.
