As has been suspected for a while, Jake Gyllenhaal is joining the comic-book universe in Spider-Man Far From Home. The Tom Holland-led sequel set to be released in July 2019 and Gyllenhaal is playing ‘Mysterio’, one of Spider-Man’s many villainous nemeses.
Though I’m sure he’s pumped, his official announcement tells another story. He posted a video to his Instagram of him putting down a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man comic, but looking pissed off and exclaiming “What the f**k!?”
The caption reads: “I just realised I’m not playing Spider-Man.”
Heavy days.

The funny thing is, back in the day, Jake Gyllenhaal actually very nearly did play Spider-Man when Tobey Maguire had a back injury. But that never came to be and now, it looks like Jake is back for revenge, or justice, or something.

The hype is very real now that Jake Gyllenhaal’s role is confirmed, and it’s rolling in in the form of glorious fan art.

If only Jake had played opposite Tobey Maguire, there could have been a sub-plot about the villain being somehow related to Spider-Man. It’s definitely believable.
But I’m sure whatever is in store for Jake as Mysterio will be just perfect.
