The Spice Girls Owe Australia A Stop On Their Recently Confirmed Reunion Tour But Chances Are We Won’t Get It

If you wannabe my favourite band of all-time, you’ll finally tour my country and let me revisit my childhood, dammit!

This week, Mel B, aka Scary Spice, finally confirmed the only nineties reunion tour we actually care about – the Spice Girls.

Tall tales and rumours of a Spice Girls comeback have been circulating the Internet for years.

Most recently we were all recently duped into believing the girls would come together for the Prince Harry and Meagan Markle wedding.

Alas, that did not occur, but ever since the ladies posted this snap together, we’ve continued to hold out hope for a reunion.

Now, Mel B says it’s actually happening – and all those silly rumours about Victoria Beckham backing out and causing trouble are being put to rest.

While guest co-hosting the Today show in the US, Scary Spice told host Hoda Kotb the girls would definitely be performing together in the future.

“We are going to be performing. Finally, they’ve got it together.”

When Hoda mentioned the fact that Beckham has continuously denied these claims, Mel B set the record straight.

“She’s always blood saying that, stop it, we are touring. Yes. Should I have really said that out loud? Yes, we are going to be doing performances together for sure.”

OK, great, so they’re touring. Amazing news.

But besides driving ourselves insane wondering when the heck it’s going to happen – the other issue we’ve got is whether or not the girls will finally make it to Australia and give us a taste of their real-life Spice Girls awesomeness.

They keep saying they will, but they never do.

They’re the girls who cried spice!

When the group were still intact, the majority of their tours were based in Northern America and Europe – poor ‘Straya was left out time and time again. Even their ‘World Tour’ in the late nineties didn’t include our humble country.

In fact, the only time the girls made it to our sunny shores was for the premiere of Spice World at the State Theatre in Sydney.

I remember it like it was yesterday – they touched down in Sydney and all hell broke loose.

We were a nation (and city) obsessed, and every inch of George Street between the Queen Victoria Building and the theatre was packed with screaming fans.

No joke, it was pretty damn spicy.

The day they touched down was January 10, 1998. Just five months later, on May 31, they officially announced Geri’s departure, and with it, our dreams of an Aussie tour were shattered for the first but not the last time.

We were still on our Sydney-visit high, and then they dropped the bomb, and we were devastated.

Yes, the Spice Girls came to Australia once and all we got was a lousy Today Tonight interview.

Actually, the interview was kind of amazing – the reporter reiterated that then Prime Minister John Howard decide not to meet with them and Geri’s response?

“He’s too scared! I think he should have more females in his cabinet, that’s what I think!”

No matter where they decide to go in the future – it’s clear Australia deserves a Spice Girls tour.

Not just because we’ve missed out literally every single time they toured in the past, but because we’re a nation of supporters – we even had Barry Humphries in the Spice World movie!

In 2007, there was a glimmer of hope. We saw the Spice Girls together again, all five of them, at a press conference in London.

Here they announced they’d embarking on a full world tour, which was meant to include Sydney.

There was a website, a ticket ballot – the whole enchilada.

The girls performed across the US and Europe, but when it come to heading Down Under, they took to their official website to announce they wouldn’t be able to complete the tour due to family commitments.

“Sadly the tour needs to come to an end by the end of February due to family and personal commitments for Emma, Geri, Mel B, Melanie C and Victoria. It was announced in June that, as well as the Europe and the US, the girls planned to visit Australia, China, South Africa and Argentina. Due to the phenomenal demand for tickets in the UK and the US along with the touring logistics for such a massive production it was not possible to fit everything in. As the girls return to normal family life and the kids go back to school they are reviewing all the options, who knows what the future might bring!”

We were heartbroken the tour never happened, not just because we’d initially been so excited, but because Australia has always been a huge Spice Girls supporter.

Their first two albums went platinum six times and until recently, the gang were the highest selling girl group in Australia with 16 total ARIA certifications.

Come on girls, give us something to dream about, a little dash of hope to hold onto.

You made such an impact on our lives, don’t let it end this way.
