Video game movies have historically ranged from ‘meh’ to ‘downright awful’ in terms of quality. It remains to be seen where the upcoming CGI/live-action Sonic live-action film lands on that spectrum, but it has one thing that already prevents it from being a complete mess.
In an example of genius casting, Deadline reports that Jim Carrey has been cast in the Sonic movie as the blue blur’s long-time nemesis, Doctor Ivo ‘Eggman’ Robotnik.
That’s right, the man behind The Mask, Ace Ventura, and The Grinch will be returning to the big-screen as a moustachioed video game icon.
Carrey may be better known as an artist and for trolling Donald Trump with his scathing (and surprisingly well drawn) cartoons these days, but there was a time when he was known for his portrayal of several manic and/or eccentric film characters.
Given how Dr. Eggman is a larger-than-life character (literally) can go from being an self-entitled genius to a blubbering manchild with the flip of a coin, this role is perfect for Carrey to dust off his much-missed acting chops.
Seriously, imagine seeing a cocktail blend of this…
With this…
And a dash of this…
At the moment, we know very little about the Sonic movie other than it is penciled in for a 2019 release date, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter are involved in some way.
Sonic The Hedgehog was (and still is) one of the most beloved video game characters, having been the face of Sega back in the 90s, and this upcoming movie will be his first foray onto the big screen.
To be honest, the Sonic movie will almost certainly suck but at least we’ll get some vintage Jim Carrey craziness to help it go down easier.
