Serena Williams Sings Her Heart Out In A New Cover Of Divinyls' Classic Banger I Touch Myself To Raise Awareness For Breast Cancer

“Early detection is key – it saves so many lives. I just hope this helps to remind women of that.”

Serena Williams hasn’t had the easiest few weeks following her controversial 2018 US Open final match against Naomi Osaka in which she got into an argument with chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

But whether you think positively or negatively of Williams, there’s no denying that she is a role model who inspires many people every day. And in an effort to move on from the US Open debacle, the tennis legend has decided to focus her energy on raising awareness for breast cancer through the power of song.

Swapping out her racquets for a mic, Williams recorded a cover of Divinyls’ classic banger “I Touch Myself”. In addition to singing her heart out, she also filmed a special video which features her topless and singing the song directly to the camera.

Williams says the video was filmed as part of the I Touch Myself project, which was first launched by Breast Cancer Network Australia in 2014. The project was created in memory of Divinyls lead singer Chrissy Amphlett, who passed away from breast cancer in 2013.

It is a powerful message and Williams admitted filming the video pushed her right out of her comfort zone, but she bravely swallowed any doubts due to the importance of raising awareness about breast cancer to women around the world.

Whatever you may think about the tennis legend and her on-court conduct, there’s no faulting her work towards causes such as this. Hopefully her decision to sit out the rest of the 2018 tennis season means we’ll see more great campaigns like this,  as well as a rested and re-energised Serena Williams for the start of the 2019 season in Australia.
