New Cases Of Coronavirus Are Starting To Decrease, Here's What That Means

March 23rd was the last day that the amount of newly diagnosed cases went up.

We’re all desperate for good news abut the spread of coronavirus. It seems like such a bleak, unforgiving time at the moment with no real end in sight, so any news that tells us we might not be doomed is welcomed with open arms. Here’s what I’m clinging to today: new cases of coronavirus in Australia have decreased for a few days in a row now.

According the the Australian government website, March 23rd was the last day that the amount of newly diagnosed cases went up. Almost 400 new cases were diagnosed that day. Since then, the numbers have started dropping, and although we don’t have today’s numbers yet (because today isn’t over), we’re sitting at 143 new cases right now, so its looking like the number will continue to drop.

Three (hopefully four including today) days in a row of new cases dropping is brilliant news. It means that people are sticking to the advice of staying home, washing their hands, and doing all those things we’ve heard about to flatten the curve. It doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods just yet though.

COVID-19 is incredibly contagious, we know that. All it would take would be – for example – an entire cruise ship worth of people who had been exposed to be let off into a major city like Sydney and left to wander around to affect the new cases rates. But that totally wouldn’t happen, right?

And 100% of people would absolutely take social distancing seriously, right?

It’s a good start, and the drop in new cases means that we’re doing something right. It doesn’t mean that we’ll all be allowed back out into normal life in the next week, but it means that we’re having an impact by staying home.

It doesn’t mean the statistics will stay this way forever – it won’t take much to set off a new round of new coronavirus cases, but we can absolutely take solace in the fact that people are working together to get to the other side of this thing.
