Usually getting another Shrek movie would be fantastic news met with nothing but hype, but this reboot is making us all nervous.
Universal Pictures’ Illumination Entertainment is rebooting the franchise, but they don’t have any of the original cast secured for the production. Lord help us all.
'Despicable Me' producer Chris Meledandri is on board to reboot 'Shrek' and 'Puss in Boots' and hopes to reunite the original voice cast ?

In a Variety exclusive with Chris Meledandri, the founder of Illumination and the man who headed the Despicable Me and Minion spinoff franchise, he announced that he’s been handed the keys to the kingdom.
Also the Puss in Boots spinoff franchise is in his hands now, though it’s unclear if any of us actually care about Puss in Boots at all (???).

The good news is that it sounds like he wants to use the OG vocal cast, it’s just whether or not Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas are keen.
“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome,” Meledandri said. “And while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations,”

Even if they can get the original cast to sign on to the reboot, the plan seems to be to do something different and go in a new direction with the Shrek narrative.
“You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure,” he said.

This is all pretty stressful stuff because Shrek is a holy work of art that strictly must not be tainted by any halfway attempts to revive it. Surely the process should be to sign on the original cast and then move ahead with production???
But this is the way the cookie is crumbling so let us pray that the Shrek crew empathise and save this reboot mission by getting on board. SOS.
