By this point, we’re all pretty much in agreement – plastic is a problem. It begins life by pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, and usually ends up choking an innocent baby turtle to death. Plastic straws are going extinct because they’re pretty much unrecyclable, and vengeance is sweet. It’s about time we realised that plastic bottles are just as bad – if not worse.
At the moment, we’re using more than our own body weight in plastic every year, and buying bottled beverages is absolutely not helping. Recycling is great and all – less sea creature death involved there – but it’s still a really energy intensive process.
With our discarded recyclables piling up ’cause other countries aren’t letting us foist our garbage on them anymore, recycling is looking like less of an option anyway.
Shockingly, it’s not actually that hard to use reusable products instead, with a little bit of commitment. Being a single-use rebel and refilling your plastic bottles is one thing, but after a while you’re going to want a more permanent solution.
What’s the point in filling up with fresh, tasty, filtered water if you’re just going to ruin it with single-use plastic nastiness? Some plastic bottles that you may think are safe to reuse can be full of BPA, PBDE, PET, and plenty of other carcinogenic alphabet soups. Plus they make beverages taste gross regardless. So you really need to check what your bottle is made of.
Your body will thank you for refuelling on purified water, especially if it’s stored in a food-safe vessel – be it glass, steel or a high-quality long-life plastic alternative.
Filling up from the tap instead of the store is going to reduce your carbon footprint, as well as makes a big impact on your wallet as well as your carbon footprint. Just don’t be a fool and stick a plastic straw in there, please.
