Sydney's CBD Light Rail Broke Down On Day One, Which Is So Very 2019

Good. Great. Grand.

This has been quite a big weekend for Sydney Transport. Saturday was the first day the city’s long-awaited CBD light rail began taking passengers.

However, in a move that feels very on-brand for 2019 (which has been a flaming pile of garbage), one of the dang things broke down in the morning of day one.

Everyone this weekend.

Kind of makes you want to break out into hives, doesn’t it?

As The Guardian reports, the mishap went down a couple of hours into the new service’s schedule.

The outlet shares that a tram ran into mechanical issues at Circular Quay and remained perched there for about an hour. Other trams travelling through the area had to side-step the stop, terminating at Town Hall, instead.

According to the ABC, no trams were running between Circular Quay and Central between 1:50pm and 3:30pm.

The light rail network, which hasn’t been running in Sydney’s CBD for almost 60 years, also saw “teething problems” delay two trams in Randwick for a number of minutes, The Guardian writes.

Taking to Facebook, Sydney Light Rail thanked passengers for their patience during the less than ideal start to the service.

“We have experienced a few teething issues as we bed in this brand new network, and we’d like to thank everyone for their patience today,” they shared.

Despite the initial hiccups, the Light Rail’s L2 Randwick line “ran over 100 services, and more than 53,000 customers” rode the trams for free this Saturday.

Here’s hoping the remainder of their first week of service is less of a “light rail fail”, to quote the sentiment of Twitter.
