It’s gone from bad to worse for Meghan Markle. It’s been less than two weeks since Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were stepping down from royal duties, and Markle’s dad is already dragging her in the headlines.
In a recent interview with Alaska TV/Channel 5, Thomas Markle called his daughter’s choice “disappointing” because “she actually got every young girl’s dream.”
“Every young girl wanted to become a princess, and now it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.”
“It’s kind of embarrassing,” he said. “When they got married they took on an obligation, and that obligation is to be part of the Royals, and to represent the Royals. And it would be foolish for them not to.”
“It’s one of the greatest, long-living institutions ever,” he said. “They’re destroying it, they’re cheapening it. They’re making it shabby.”
“They’re turning it into Walmart with a crown on it,” he added.
Meghan Markle has had a difficult relationship with her dad since marrying Prince Harry. In a 2018 interview with Piers Morgan, Markle accused his daughter of “ghosting” and told the cameras, “whatever differences we have, we should be able to work them out.”
In the lead-up to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s wedding, Thomas Markle admitted to staging paparazzi photos for publicity and money after they were sold to newspapers all over the world. Speaking to Good Morning Britain, he said, “For that incident I’ve apologised 100 times – I don’t feel that’s worthy of being shunned or ghosted, that’s ridiculous.”
In a private letter Meghan Markle accused Mail on Sunday of unlawfully publishing, she accused her dad of breaking her heart “into a million pieces” and leaving her “worried, confused, shocked and absolutely blindsided,” by his actions.
In his recent interview, Markle’s dad said he “can’t see” his daughter reaching out to him, and I’m going to speculate and say she definitely won’t want to reach out to him after hearing these comments.
