It’s always sad when someone you really liked goes off the deep end, and Jim Carrey is a classic example of that for me. A childhood favourite who turned into an anti-vaxxer, and then got really weird around women in interviews all of a sudden. This time Jim Carrey has told a woman interviewing him that she was the last thing he had left to ‘do’.
In a press junket for Sonic The Hedgehog, reporter Charlotte Long asked Carrey: “I know your film Sonic has a bucket list, and I was wondering after all you’ve done in your career and your life, is there anything still left on your bucket list?”
You can probably see where this is going.
“Just you. That’s it. It’s all done now.”
When Long replied with “I don’t know what to say to that,” Carrey told her to “just own it.”
This comes just over a week after Jim Carrey was dragged for saying that Margot Robbie was only successful because of her looks. Sitting next to her on The Graham Norton Show’s couch, he said “It’s incredible that you’ve got as far as you have with your obvious physical disadvantages. It’s unbelievable, it’s really something. That’s pure talent right there!”
As with most men in Hollywood, Jim Carrey had made some pretty serious missteps before the #MeToo movement took off. Mainly the messy relationship he had with his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White before she took her own life, and the video he made confessing his love to Emma Stone in 2011.
But since the #MeToo movement took off in late 2017, any excuse that could have been made for telling women that you’d ‘do’ them in an interview has gone out the window. It’s well and truly established by now that this isn’t ok and we won’t put up with it anymore.
If he keeps insisting on harassing women in their workplaces, then his actions will catch up to him one day. And if he doesn’t know what to say to that, then maybe he should ‘just own it’.
