The Reason You've Never Seen Ryan Gosling's Kids Is A Lesson In Consent

"It works for us this way."

In the social media-driven world we live in now, we know everything about celebrities and their families. A-listers have become more accessible than ever before, but for Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, we have no right to know their kids without consent.

Over the weekend, Mendes shared an IG pic of her favourite artwork with the caption, “One of my favourite pieces of art from my favourite Rene Magritte. I’ve always loved this one and it feels especially relevant right now. Sending lots of love out there.”

When one fan asked in the comments section why she doesn’t post about her daughters or husband Ryan Gosling, Mendes responded, “I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids.”

“I’ll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life. And since my children are still so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent. And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give me consent.”

“As far as Ryan and I, it just works for us this way, to stay private,” she wrote. “Sending loads of love to you at this time.”

Mendes’ social media isn’t the only place she’s censoring her private life – images of her daughter’s faces are blurred in paparazzi images, and she’s not alone

Speaking of analysing celeb behaviour on Instagram, hear about Britney Spears’ latest antics below:

George and Amal Clooney took legal action against a French magazine that published images of their newborn twins without permission, Halle Berry told California legislators in 2013 “these are little innocent children who didn’t ask to be celebrities,” and when Emily Blunt and John Krasinski debuted their daughter Hazel to the world, the actor tweeted, “Pics of kids should only come direct from parents.”

Whether they’re celebrities or not, parents – including Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling – have every right to keep the identities and lives of their children away from prying eyes. Just because someone is famous, doesn’t mean the rest of the world has a right to know every part of their life.

Kudos to Eva Mendes for standing her ground and keeping her private life, private.
