Back in 2016, Forbes listed Johnny Depp as Hollywood’s ‘most overpaid actor’ for the second year in row. The publication stated established male leads like Depp had historically successful films that allowed them to “command eight figures, despite frequent recent cinematic washouts.” Fast-forward to 2020, and according to Johnny Depp, that Pirates of the Caribbean money is dwindling.
During his recent libel trial against British newspaper The Sun, Depp revealed he lost $650 million in earnings from his work in the lucrative Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
According to The Mirror, Depp found out his fortunes had been wiped out the day he attended ex-wife Amber Heard’s 30th birthday party in 2016. It was shortly after this party (and poo-gate) that the couple parted ways.
The Mirror reports that during court proceedings, Depp’s lawyer asked him how much money he’d lost and he responded, “it was put to me this way. It was put to me since Pirates II and III I had made – and it seems a ludicrous number – $650 million.”
Depp revealed that when he finally fired his former business managers, “I had not only lost the $650 million but I was $100 million in the hole because they had not paid the government my taxes for 17 years.”
“It was a bad meeting,” he added.
Depp’s lawyers went on to claim he and Heard had an explosive argument at her 30th birthday party, but denied he was ever violent towards his ex-wife, despite The Sun’s “wife beater” claims.

Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean financial shitstorm is just one of many shocking revelations to come out of his court case involving ex-wife Amber Heard. Over the past few weeks, we’ve learned the nail in the coffin for the former couple was when Heard allegedly “defecated” in their bed as a “prank.”
Fellow actor James Franco has also been dragged into the saga, with claims Depp “slapped and kicked” Heard on a private jet after accusing her of having an affair with Franco.
