Miley Cyrus Reveals The True Meaning Behind 'Midnight Sky'

"I wrote Midnight Sky in the earlier stages of the pandemic..."

Nova’s Ben & Liam were lucky enough to score a bit of time with Miley Cyrus. Yes, really.

Speaking with Miley, Nova chatted all things music – strange for a radio station, but run with it – including the meaning of Midnight Sky and the album’s origins.

“That [music for Midnight Sky] was one of the things I ended up losing in the fire at Malibu,” Miley Cyrus explained.

“My collaborators had the music but it no longer felt related to me or relevant because so much has changed. That’s what really started this process. I started writing this record two years ago, and diving in the deep end about a year ago.

“I wrote Midnight Sky in the earlier stages of the pandemic and I felt that I was able to reflect, which none of us have really ever had time for [before]. A lot of us have taken inventory of what we’re carrying around, what serves us and what doesn’t anymore; what we’ve been carrying around that’s someone else’s.”

“I feel I had a really reflective year so Midnight Sky was about controlling my own narrative and telling the story myself. And a lot of that came from the space I’ve had during this time,” Miley explained about Midnight Sky’s meaning.

“All of our purpose, at the beginning of this, came to a screeching halt. I think as human beings we’re very adaptable, we’ve become very flexible and created new structure and reasons to get out of bed in the morning. I think that’s been a helpful tool for me, for sure.”

And that’s not all, if you’ve been wondering if there are celebs using the cover of masks to sneak out for a cheeky coffee on the D/L, your suspicions are correct.

“I actually have found that, there’s somewhat of a benefit, for me,” Miley told Ben & Liam.

So there you have it folks, keep an extra eye out when popping out for a flat white.
